Homemade Hot Chocolate – Stovetop and Slow Cooker Versions!

‘Tis the season to make lots of warm beverages. One of my boys' favorite recipes when they were little is this hot chocolate! It's easy to make, can be made on the stovetop or on the crockpot while you're out playing in the snow, and will definitely get their bellies nice and cozy warm!

What is Hot Chocolate Made Of?

This homemade hot chocolate recipe only requires 5 ingredients! We have several hot cocoa recipes on the blog and I'll link them down below.

How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate

You can make this recipe in a large pot on the stove or a slow cooker. To make this in the slow cooker, just dump all the ingredients in your crockpot. Keep it on low for around 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

How to make Hot Chocolate with Cocoa Powder

  1. Add 4 oz. of White Chocolate Chips to the bottom of your pot.
  2. Mix in 2 cups of Whole Milk and 1 cup of Heavy Cream.
  3. Mix in the Vanilla Extract and Cocoa Powder.
  4. Heat on medium heat until the Chocolate Chips have melted and most of the Cocoa Powder has mixed in. Whisk during this step to ensure the cocoa powder has incorporated completely.
  5. Use a ladle to scoop into a cup and serve with Marshmallows and Chocolate Syrup.

Other Homemade Hot Chocolate Mixes

We've made a few fun hot chocolate mixes over the years. Some were clearly for when our boys were little like the cute reindeer mix. I'm also not opposed to using a good store-bought mix like Godiva or the Franzese Italian hot chocolate mix that they use to make Mocha Lattes at the Nordstrom cafe. I buy the Franzese brand for my homemade mocha lattes and it is SOOO GOOD!
