Gift in a Jar: Fruited Rice Mix

You can make a few of these and give them as presents or just keep them for yourself I spent about $9 on all of the ingredients (counting spices) which made 6 jars. That's just $1.50 a jar for a family of 4!

Fruited Rice Mix Gift in a Jar Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup, Brown Rice (uncooked)
  • 2 tsp, Minced Onion (dried)
  • 1 tbsp, Parsley Flakes (dried)
  • 2 tsp, Chicken Bouillon Granules (or 2 cubes)
  • 2 tsp, Brown Sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 tsp, Thyme (dried)
  • 1/4 tsp, Black Pepper
  • 1/8 tsp, Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/2 cup, Wild Rice (uncooked)
  • 1/4 cup, Dried Apricots (chopped)
  • 1/4 cup, Cranberries (dried)
  • 1/4 cup, Raisins

Instructions for assembling the Jar:

  1. Layer the ingredients in the jar in the order as they are listed above.
  2. Combine the apricots, cranberries and raisins in a small Ziploc bag.
  3. Close the dried fruit packet with a twisty tie.
  4. Cut the excess plastic away above the twisty.
  5. Place the bag on top of the rice mixture in the jar.

Once all of the steps above are complete, cover the jar tightly with a lid. Add your fabric, ribbon or raffia and the directions for baking.

Directions for Cooking

Make a copy of the cooking directions below and place them on a card or paper and attach to the jar.

:: 1 Jar, Fruited Rice Mix
:: 2 1/4 cups, Water
:: 1 tbsp, Butter
:: 1/2 cup, Orange Juice

  1. Remove the dried fruit packet from jar and set aside.
  2. Combine water, butter and remaining contents of jar in a large sauce pan.
  3. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer 45 to 50 minutes or until rice is almost tender.
  4. Stir in orange juice and contents of dried fruit packet.
  5. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until rice is tender.
  6. Makes 4 servings.
