Cheap Solution to Moldy Front Loader

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Amberley:

Front load washing machines are air tight and mold thrives in the grooves in the door. To get rid of the mold and smell, there is no need to buy the expensive washing machine cleaner.

To keep your front load washing machine from getting that moldy smell, run the run the sanitize option with just 1/2 cup bleach once a month. Sometimes I will throw the shower curtain liners in that “super” washer cleaning cycle. The washer is fully sanitized!

You can help to keep it this way by removing laundry immediately and by leaving the door open between uses to dry it out.

  1. Germany has had front loading washers and dryers since before I was born. I don’t think they ever had top loaders. My mother and grandmother always just dried it with a rag each time they were done washing for the day with a rag and left the door open. That took care of any oders most of the time. Once a year she would have us wipe the inside and door area with a solution of some kind of powder (think it was like baking soda) and water.

  2. Well, the front loader I had wouldnt have been helped by this tip. The mold was on the sealing ring in the door but you couldnt get to it because it was on the outside of the ring. The repair technician took the ring out and that is how I saw it. After that, I switched back to a top loader. My family and I were suffering from mold health related issues (ie asthma). Since we got rid of it, no more athsma.
