Safety for Bulk Meat Purchases

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Kat:

Everyone knows it's often cheaper to buy meat in large packs and separate them into smaller packages for freezing. However, this can cause problems when meat is recalled and you no longer have the original packaging. A friend just had to throw out several packages of ground chuck due to an E. coli recall even though she wasn't sure if hers was part of the recall.

Whenever you repackage food of any kind, write the label details (lot number, expiration date, UPC code, etc.) on the new packaging with a sharpie. It takes just a few minutes but the alternative is throwing our perfectly good food just to be on the safe side in case of a recall. A minute or two to write down the details is worth it to me!
