Make a Gallon of Milk Last Longer

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Brenda:

We buy whole milk for the kids. However, my husband and I do not need all the fat content from whole milk. So, when my husband and I are drinking milk we start with half a glass of milk and then add water to the rest of the glass. This thins the milk, eliminates some calories, and saves money! It still tastes great!!

It's a win-win for the whole family: the kids are getting the nutrition they need, and we are stretching our dollar and our milk!

Brenda, you may have suggested something to help my family's strife over my purchase of Skim Milk. Hubby and the boys like Whole Milk but I can't stand the taste. I don't drink a lot of milk so I would totally do this just for the taste and only purchase one type of milk!

  1. We eat a lot of scrambled eggs at my house and have found that water works just as good (maybe even better than) milk. We buy the raw milk at $7 a gallon so every bit of saving helps!!

  2. To stretch milk out i take a gallon of milk and a saved empty milk gallon jug and pour 1/3 of the milk into empty jug then add powder milk mixed up to it for drinking this does not leave the powder milk taste in your mouth then the gallon i put the 1/3 in i add that much instant milk to and use this for cereal , baking, or gravys. Also just to note here i think mixing powder milk and useing for gravy makes a better gravy than regular milk and taste great too.

I am here at the sight but I do not see the savings tip that I submitted about 8 days ago.

    1. Shari, I am working through getting each tip posted. That’s my goal for today – to get a lot of them scheduled to post!! Don’t worry, it will be posted. There are just a LOT that I have to get scheduled since this has become popular!

  4. I am a little hesitant to try this, just not so sure about watered-down milk. But since whole milk costs the same as skim, this can potentially cut your weekly milk expenses down by 50%! Since we go thru 2 gallons of skim milk per week, I think I will have to give it a try.

    1. We are trying this and we have saved so much. My children can’t tell the difference.
