Sidewalk Chalk Paint
This DIY sidewalk chalk paint only takes 3 ingredients and can be made in less than 5 minutes!
With so many people at home now, there are tons of fun pictures being shared of the sidewalk drawings they are passing on daily walks. With the current state of affairs, it's been a refreshing look at people enjoying themselves with a simple and easy DIY. Not to mention all the creative things they are making!
This sidewalk chalk recipe is intended to be a liquid sidewalk chalk like a paint. We have found it best to mix up and put into a squirt bottle like you see in the picture above. You could even use an empty ketchup or mustard bottle if you want to.
If you can't get to the store, or maybe your stores are sold out like so many are reporting, this is an easy DIY for you and the kids to make together. It really only takes 5 minutes and I'm sure you have all the ingredients you will need to make it already in your pantry!
DIY Sidewalk Chalk Paint Ingredients
- Baking Soda
- Corn Starch
- Liquid Food Coloring
- Water
You will also need measuring cups to measure the ingredients as well as some clear plastic bottles (similar to these clear plastic bottles).
How to Make Sidewalk Chalk Paint
- Mix together even parts of baking powder and baking soda (I did 3/4 Cup of each).
- Add 1-2 drop of food coloring to each bottle.
- Fill your bottles 1/3 way with water and shake.
- Fill the bottles 2/3 way with your baking soda and corn starch mixture and shake.
Sidewalk Drawing
Use your squirt bottles to draw pictures on your sidewalk or driveway. When finished, use your hose to wash it right off!

Does this stain the concrete??
Hi Michele, nope, this liquid chalk paint doesn’t stain the concrete!
How long can you keep the paint in bottle…i want to make and deliver to grandkids for them to play with in a few days
Hi Deborah, what a fun idea! I would make it with all the dry ingredients in the bottle. You could even add the food coloring too if you want to. Then maybe have your grandkids and a parent add the water and shake up when you ship or drop off. It will last longer that way and you don’t have to worry about the water thinning it out too much. I would say when it’s mixed it will last a few days. Ours never did last beyond the day they were playing with it.
