Making Your Own Laudry Soap

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Jamie:

I have been making my families laundry soap for three months now.  I use this liquid laundry soap recipe I found on The Duggar Family site.

I spend about $10 on enough ingredients to make four 5-gallon buckets. Each 5-gallon bucket lasts 2-3 months for our family of four. I have saved at least a hundred dollars.

I have never been brave enough to make my own laundry soap. Does anyone have any other favorite laundry soap recipes? I may do some experimentation with a few when the kids go back to school this fall (and I have more time).

  1. Hey Andrea! Andrea posted her “powder” laundry soap recipe on our site a while back. It works really well. I made it once, but have just been too lazy to do it lately.

  2. One of my favorite things to do with the soap is buy one of my favorite essential oils from whole foods and put it in the soap. We use orange oil because the whole family loves it. If you think of a great way to store the soap, I am open for ideas. I haven’t figured out the best way to store it…

    1. I keep mine in (washed out) cat litter containers. The kind with screw on lids, works perfect.

  3. Thanks! I am gonna try this. If it cleans our clothes, I’ll be doing it all the time.

  4. I hate*hate*hate homemade liquid laundry soap! It’s got the consistency of the stuff that comes out of your nose, it renders whatever it touches (spoons, big pot) useless for anything else, and it’s a headache to make. Our m.o. is to grate a bar of soap (Ivory, Fels Naptha, Zote, whatever you like), then run it in the food processor with 2 cups of Borax and 2 cups of washing soda until it’s a fine powder mixture. Use a tablespoon per load. It may not last as long as the liquid, but it’s got it beat hands-down in the convenience department.

    1. I agree the consistancy of the liquid is gross. When I got a front load washer I started adding about 1/2C of the liquid detergent I had that’s not he to it and in addition to making it smell different, it kind of binds it together. Sort of. I also like to add tea tree oil to mine.

  5. I have not tried liquid laundry soap but have tried the powdered version & it didn’t get our clothes clean. Grass stains, dirt stains, mustard, & the dreaded Chef Boyardee stains were practically a lost cause. Plus the bottom of our socks just did not get clean — even with bleach. I even had 2 bars of Fels-naptha. We do have really hard water (almost a 10 on the scale) so that might of been the issue.
