Save on Food Costs by Buying “Almost Old”
The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Candacia:
I am a student with a monthly food budget of $50. I have several food intolerances so food is very expensive for me. I cut food costs by buying “almost old” salad at the “manager's price” at my local supermarket.
The salad is usually still fresh after 3 days when bought at the discount price of $.50, instead of the usual price of $3. Since I have a salad for at least one of my meals each day and each bag is good for 4 meals.
My total cost per month is $4 for 32 meals. This saves me $20 a month which I can use to splurge and eat out with friends.

Great tip! I'll also add to find out from the produce department when they reduce the prices on certain items too. If you happen to see something close to the expiration date, they may reduce it so they can get it sold!

How do you keep your salad fresh after opening the bag? I can’t seem to keep it from getting wilted or brown even for a day after opening it (even when it’s not manager special). And my Kroger has it for $.99 not $.50 unfortunately but still a better deal that regular price or even sale price.
My two local stores don’t mark down produce til at least part of the bag is visibly wilted/brown, I wish my store did better. $50/month WOW!
