How to Make Homemade Brown Sugar

I never thought I would be writing a post on how to make brown sugar but here it is! With the current situation and pandemic, having pantry staples on hand is essential for lots of homemade cooking. If you're making your own pantry items from scratch, definitely add this one to your virtual recipe book.

Whether you ran out of brown sugar in the middle of a recipe. Or maybe yours is rock hard because it wasn't properly stored (happens to me all the time!). Or, maybe your grocery stores out of all the things right now like mine and so many others. Well, this recipe will help you make your own brown sugar in a pinch!

Can you make brown sugar without molasses?

Try using maple syrup in place of the molasses.

What can be used as a substitute for brown sugar?

I use this monkfruit sweetener a lot. You can find it in the natural section of your grocer and Costco now carries it too. You really can't tell the difference!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup, Sugar
    1 TBS, Molasses

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse until well blended.
  2. Store remaining brown sugar in an airtight container.
