Homemade Granola Bars

Homemade Granola Bars

A sweet and crunchy granola bar is a perfect snack for after school, a trip to the park, or as a lunch box filler. I love making my own because it is easy. I can control the ingredients, and there are so many more flavor combinations that I can create at home.

While there is some time investment up front, after they are prepared they become a tasty and healthy grab and go convenience food. Change up the ingredients a bit to suit you; use less brown sugar or substitute coconut sugar to make it even healthier. This is also a great recipe if you have a peanut free school, or your child is allergic to peanut butter.

Homemade Granola Bars Ingredients

  • 2 cups, Quick Oats
  • 1 cup, Brown Sugar or Coconut Sugar
  • 1 cup, All-Purpose Flour or Whole Wheat Flour
  • 1 tsp, Ground Cinnamon
  • ½ tsp, Salt
  • ¾ cup, Raisins
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup, Honey
  • ½ cup, Coconut Oil (or Canola Oil)
  • 2 tsp, Vanilla Extract

To add an additional healthy punch, substitute ground flax seed or wheat germ for some of the flour.

Homemade Granola Bars Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. In a large bowl combine: oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, raisins, salt until well combined, be sure to break up any clumps of brown sugar or raisins.
  3. Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients and pour in egg, oil, honey, and vanilla. Mix well with your hands.
  4. Generously grease or line a 9 x 13 pan with parchment paper. Press granola bar mixture into pan right up to the sides, try to distribute evenly.
  5. Bake for for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool for 2-3 minutes, cut bars to desired size. Do not allow to cool completely before cutting or they will be too hard and will crumble apart.

Here are some ideas for add ins to create different flavors:

  • Almond Extract
  • Almonds
  • Coconut
  • Craisins
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Diced Apples
  • Mango
  • Mini Peanut Butter Cups
  • Pecans
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Walnuts

A good box of granola bars runs anywhere from $3-$4 which usually contains 8 bars. With the small amount you use from the larger bags of ingredients you are only spending about $2 on one batch that will make approximately 12 bars. Besides saving you money, this is a simple way to cut out some of the sugars, and preservatives that are in prepackaged granola bars.

Enjoy!
