Save on Travel

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Amy:

When I travel, I always compare travel websites for the best deal on hotel. THEN, I call the hotel. They have always met and improved the deal in order for me to book through the hotel.

I just booked through the Hyatt in Chicago. The person met the deal and threw in 1/2 off parking!

  1. Andrea or Amy can you please explain why a hotel might do that? What is in it for a hotel to not want you to book through the travel agency – simply theey dont want to pay the commision to the booking agent? Can someone explain why this would be a good deal for the hotel too?

    Thanks. I love the website!

    1. Kathy, in my experience, the hotels give those agents/sites a certain # of rooms to book with whatever rate is set. But, as you mentioned, they are paying them commission of some sort to sell them. Sometimes the agents/sites don’t have the other discounts available or they don’t want to share that since they want a higher commission too. I’ve also experienced a reduced rate by calling the hotel directly. Just simply asking if they have other discounts available is all that is needed. Many times they offer discounts even if you’re a Sam’s club member – crazy I know. Just ask!
