Purchase Gift Cards and Save on Gas!

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Robyn:

I buy $500-$1000 dollars in Mastercard gift cards at Kroger each month. I try to do the max of $500 each time I download because of the $6.50 download charge. This earns me an instant $1 off per gallon of gas. I pay off this card with my credit card, so I am still earning rewards on my other card too!

Each time I spend money at Kroger on groceries, I use the gift cards and continue to earn fuel points!! My husband and I are very careful and always try to have an empty tank when we go to the gas station ….together!

You can save up to $1 off a gallon of gas at Kroger (up to a max of 35 gallons). This saves us $35 each time we fill up. This is so easy to do and makes me feel really good about getting cheaper gas – just for grocery shopping at Kroger!!

    I have never bought Mastercard gift cards so I don’t understand what she is saying here. Can someone explain it to me. I thought you went to the cash register and told the cashier how much you want on the card. What are you downloading? I also don’t understand this part “I pay off this card with my credit card, so I am still earning rewards on my other card too!”

      Debbie, typically Mastercard and Visa cards require a download or activation fee for purchasing the card. So, that is what Robyn is referring to. The other part is that since she is using a credit card that is giving her rewards (some will give you a % back on your purchases) to purchase these gift cards that help her earn discounts on fuel, she’s saving even more after all is said and done.

      I just purchased several gift cards with the Kroger quadruple fuel points promotion (I didn’t get Mastercard or Visa cards since they weren’t part of the promotion though). I then used my Upromise Mastercard and earned cash back rewards as part of my agreement with this particular credit card. We have $1 off a gallon of gas for a while now since I purchased several for the next few months. It’s a great way to save even more!

    So if I bought visa/master/amex gift cards they would not get the 4x points? would they still get 1x??

      Matt, the visa/master/amex gift cards weren’t part of the 4x points. They usually aren’t but you should still get the normal amount for purchasing them.

    Thank you Andrea! That makes it much clearer! What a fantastic idea! We have decided to use Olive Garden for my son’s rehearsal dinner for his wedding. Guess where we are purchasing our gift cards?! :) Thanks again!
