Cheap and Healthy Way to Make Your Own Mulling Spices

Save some of the peels from all those mandarin oranges when on sale and in season and dehydrate them (either in a dehydrator or in an oven on low). Then process them in a blender or food processor until they’re more of a powder.
Use some cheesecloth to make your spice bundle. I eyeball it, but I usually use about 10 whole allspice, 1/2 – 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg, 1/4 – 1/2 tsp. ground cardamom, 10+ whole cloves, and about 1/4-1/2 c. of the dehydrated mandarin orange peel. You can add a couple cinnamon sticks to this or I just float them separately so that I can use less cheese cloth.
Tie up your spice bundle with string and float it in your warming juice/wine until the desired flavor is achieved – usually a couple hours. I use this amount to flavor 2 large bottles of 100% apple cider. This tastes so much better than any packet of powdered apple cider you buy in the store, it’s cheaper, it has much less sugar (only what’s in the juice you use), and it makes your house smell AMAZING!!
