Keep Track of Your Freezer Inventory

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Carrie:

One easy way to save money is to know and use what you already have. Instead of letting food get lost inside your freezer or dry out with freezer burn, keep track of it.

Use a little dry erase board with a magnetic back. Stick it on the outside of your freezer and just write down what you have and use tally marks (without the cross over line for #5, just add another tally mark) to mark how many. If you take something out, wipe off one tally mark. No crossing things out (lists on paper can get messy) just keep wiping something off when it's gone and keep reusing the board over and over again.

Even my husband knows my system and wipes away a tally mark when he takes something out. My little board finally got so it didn't wipe clean anymore last year, but my first one lasted over 8 years!

I am planning some upcoming freezer cooking. With the new freezer we got off of Craigslist last year, this is a great idea. I have another approach that I plan on sharing with you very soon too!

  1. What a great idea Carrie! I bought a white board while at the grocery yesterday to do this. Currently I have post its on the freezer, not so good. This will be a much more organized way to keep track of things and keep it updated. I really like that I can just give it a quick glance w/out having to open the doors! Thanks for your tip and for sharing.
