How to Save on Family Passes

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Stephanie:

My best friend and I love to take our kids on fun outings but it can be super expensive if we don't have passes for the places we like to go. Getting a season pass is a great way to save money, we like to visit the Museum, the Zoo and Kings Island, but to get a pass for all three is about $600 (depending on your family size and which level of pass you get).

We decided there was no need for us both to have a pass for everything when we go together all the time anyway. This year she bought a zoo pass which includes a free adult guest and up to 6 kids; and I bought a museum pass which also includes a free adult guest and kids. This saved us about $200 each because we only needed to buy one pass but we still get to enjoy both places! Also, we always pack our lunches and we take turns doing that as well.

There's really no way to get out of the pricey Kings Island passes but we save our aluminum all year long and cash it in on Earth Day where you get double cash back, and its just in time for the passes which go up for sale in May. This saved my family of four (only 3 needed passes) almost $300 and we even had money left over after cashing in our aluminum!

Fabulous idea! This is a great reminder to always ask each establishment if options like this are available!

actually, the best time to get kings island passes is now – gold passes (includes free parking) are on sale thru the end of oct. Also, the museum center has for several years offered B1G2 passes right before Christmas. The zoo also frequently offers % off discounts. I was under the impression that the kids on your zoo/museum passes were supposed to be members of you immediate family.

    1. Peterpan, you are right on the PKI passes! We get ours at this time of the year too. And regarding the zoo/museum kids, I’ve been told by the museum at least that they are fine with having additional members considered on the passes since a lot of people babysit and need to have the pass allow for them too. They suggested we even add additional kids on just in case we brought in our kids’ friends even!

  3. Where do u take your cans that u get double money on earth day
