Homemade Noise Maker

If you need a simple DIY to make a noise maker for a sporting event, this one is about as easy as they come!

We are in the thick of football season. There is nothing like hearing the stadium announcements and feeling the stadium lights on your face and the roar of the crowd—and the noise makers!

It seems it is a trend to make personal noise makers. Given the need to pinch a few pennies (or make noise with them), this is a great idea.

Making a noise maker is simple—even for this craft-challenged mom. You can make it fun by getting the children involved. Or, get the other parents involved as you watch the children practice.

The key ingredients to make a noise maker are the “noise” holder and the “noise.”

Noise Maker Supplies

  • Plastic water or sports bottle
  • Soda 2-liter bottle
  • Milk jug (gallon or half gallon)
  • Reusable food container

DIY Noise Maker Steps

  1. Select your noise maker container.
  2. Decorate to your heart's content!
  3. Add your “noise.”

How to Make Noise

Here are a few ideas for “noise” if you need some inspiration:

  • Pennies
  • Beans
  • Popcorn kernels
  • Rice
  • Craft beads

I prefer the sports drink bottles or reusable food containers since they have a harder plastic that produce a louder noise. Just remember if you use pennies as your “noise” you will not get those back since the “noise” goes inside and the top is glued on tight.

Noise Maker Decorations

Here are a few fun ways to dress up your noise maker and show your team spirit:

Paint: Paint of any kind will work. Show your team spirit by using the team’s colors.

Craft beads: You can use your “noise” as an element to beautify your noise maker. Pick out colors that match the team’s colors or a color that denotes a popular play for the team.

Streamers or ribbons: Glue various colors of streamers or ribbons onto the ends of your game-time noise machine. When you shake it for the noise, the players will likely catch a glimpse of their colors flying in the wind.

This truly is one of those crafts that is better the less perfect you try to make it! Cheering on your home team carries so much pride. And, cheering them on with a homemade noise maker made with love is what team spirit is all about!

And, here's another noise maker I took a picture of during one of Caleb's games. Cute, right? I didn't catch the little girl's name, but I'm pretty sure it was Caleb's teammate, Evan's sister!

*Disclaimer, I have three boys, two of which play football. I don’t know what “Blue 42” stands for. I’m off to ask our 1st grader.

Have you made your own noise makers? What are the supplies to make it stand out in the crowd?

  1. Congrats on the SC Johnson gig – that is awesome. Though I am overrun with “noise” right now, that is a totally cute craft for we “craftily challenged folks” – LOL!

    1. Thanks, Lynn!! Trust me, if I can make the noise maker, anyone can. You’ll have to check out some of the other stuff on the Family Economics blog. Cathe is a contributor and she is the Head DIY gal. She makes her projects look so simple even I can do it. I need to spend time just going through everything – she’s a genius!

  2. Just FYI pumkins are $1.99 at Aldi’s….that is per pumpkin!

    1. Debbie, thanks!! I haven’t been getting an Aldi ad lately so I didn’t realize that was so cheap. I’m sure it will be that this upcoming week too. Thanks for sharing!!

  3. I was born and raised in Racine and I need to correct you. Racine is in Wisconsin (WI) not Washington (WA). I’m sure it was just a typo, but we cheeseheads need to keep up appearances! Did you visit the Golden Rondelle and the Great Workroom? Hopefully they shared kringle with you as well. If not, well, make sure you try it next time you visit. Not to be missed. Yum!!

    1. Melissa, yeah, I realized that – sorry!! We didn’t get to visit the Golden Rondelle but we saw it. We wanted to stop by but were limited with time. We didn’t get any info on Kringle either. Now I definitely want to go back to get all this stuff!!

  4. Um…Racine ,WI right not Washington. I live in Racine County WI so guess that’s why I noticed. Guess I must have missed the post that you said you were coming. The SC Johnson Wax building is awesome the city of Racine not so much. Well congrats!

    1. Gina, YES. whoops!! Only a few thousand miles in between the WI and WA, right? I didn’t post that I was coming that way since I don’t always announce when I’m traveling but I did drop it on my Facebook wall. The campus was amazing. I loved SCJ products before but love even more what they do as a company. It was a great trip!
