Fat Burnin’ Friday: The Food Tracking Results

Insert dramatic music now….Dum Dum Dummm….

Last week, I mentioned tracking all my foods this week so I could re-focus my weight loss efforts and stay on track. Well, I did great tracking foods. To spare you all the nutritional values (because many are only relevant for me), my goal is to eat between 1,200 – 1,500 calories a day. Here is the calorie breakdown by day (tracked using the Sparkpeoplenutrition tracker):

Monday: 1,511
Tuesday: 1,635 (OVER)
Wednesday: 1,399
Thursday: 1,547

I was so ravenous everyday that there was NO WAY I could have eaten only 1,200 calories. I get really hungry in the late afternoon. And, I could have chosen better snacks during that time too, like my high fiber foods to provide mah belly with fullness. I didn't meet my fiber requirement any of those days so that it was I should have done more (with water, must have lots of water when you're eating fiber..for obvious reasons :)

Of course when I run and Shred each day, my appetite goes into high gear! I just ran/Shredon Mondayand that was the day Sonic was calling my name (or that's how I'll put it :) I didn't get to do as much exercise I wanted. I live in Ohio (as I've mentioned before) and Ohio is menopausal (as I've also mentioned before). So, of course on my Monday run it was beautiful and sunny…every other day (except last night) it was rainy, and cold – pick a season already Ohio!!! :) I Shred again on Wednesday. And, I ran last night. So, 3 days of exercise this week – one day (Monday) with lots of exercise. I feel like I needed to add that considering…

I GAINED 2 STINKIN” POUNDS!!! YES, when I actually watch what I eat, I gained weight. Grrr…..But, I'm not going to let that bother me one bit seriously. I know what I was doing was right. And, I resisted SO MUCH! It's like it calls my name when I'm trying to be good! I really need to up my exercise and focus more on the right calories and not empty or high sugar calories (and bananas have a lot of sugar, but help with my muscle cramps).

So, there you have it! Full Disclosure from me (as always). I hope your week was great – even better on the weight loss front! Please let me know how you did! I really want to hear from you today!!!

Oh Andrea, how frustrating!!! I have been there. Sometimes I just think there really is no reason at all to the way we lose weight. Have you taken measurements and done body fat comparisons or anything? It might be more encouraging to see those measurements change.

I did pretty good this week. I tracked all my food starting on Monday. I just let it go yesterday because I was so busy. I also did not eat as well yestereday, but I am pretty sure that I stayed within my goal calorie range. I also did the Gazelle every day this week. I probably won’t today — park time for our homeschool group. But that is okay because I think my legs need a break. While it does not feel like much while doing it, my legs are sore!

I do not know if I lost weight, but I feel much better about myself and know I am on the right track.

Oh I do so feel your pain. But, I write to encourage not discourage. Two weeks ago I gained 4 pounds but last week I lost one. So, I celebrate the one and move forward. In the past I would have said never mind………..this won’t ever work for me……….I like myself fat! But, no more I am determined to persevere. I can tell you are determined too.

    Hi Andrea,

I love love reading your blog! Thanks for all the great deals you find out there and share! You have helped my family save quite a bit of money.

I too am trying to lose weight. I gained 50 lbs while I was expecting my 2nd child. Sounds like you are much more diligent about tracking your food intake than I am. I should do that more! My mother – in – law gave me a good hint on weight loss. It’s simple and boring. Eat more veggies. No kidding. I find that when I do that I lose more per week. Something about it ramps up your metabolism and makes you feel full but they don’t have many calories.

I have eight more pounds to lose and then I’ll be at my goal weight. It’s been an interesting ride. Good luck on your last 10 lbs!

Now I will fade back into internet oblivion….

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 12:03 pm

Kami, thanks for commenting today too!! I did have 8 more pounds to lose last week…but as you saw…grrr!!! Good luck w/ your last 8 pounds!

    Hi Andrea!

I have been following up with how much you exercise on Twitter. To be honest I think you are not eating enough. You are exercising very hard and if you are not feeding your body enough, your body may be thinking that you are in a “survival situation” which could be why your body is holding on to those calories and putting on weight.
Have you researched how many calories you should be eating for the level of activity you currently have? I had a friend that had the exact same problem as you, she was exercising very hard, on a diet of less than 1500 calories a day and not losing any weight. The nutritionist told her she either had t eat more or exercise less and trick her body into jump starting weight loss again. When I say eat more I mean still healthy food ;-P

The other thing you may want to try is to change your exercise routine a bit and try something different for a few days.

  • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 9:24 am

That is a legitimate question for sure. I use Sparkpeople to set up how many calories I’m supposed to eat. In doing that for my weight and exercise frequency, it says between 1200 – 1500. I should go back in and make sure it’s still accurate given all of the miles I’ve been running.

And, I’ve added The Shred to it a few weeks ago and that has done nothing! But, I do think maybe shredding and running on the same day isn’t good so I need to add The Shred to my off days.

Thanks for the comment luv, girl!! :)

  • Lisa @ Crazy Adventures in Parenting - May 15, 2009 @ 11:02 am

I agree with Mercedes – your body is definitely behaving, because you’re hungry and ravenous which means you’ve kicked up your metabolism. However, if you’re not keeping it up by eating all the time (little here, little there) to help keep it revved, this might explain why the weight you wish to lose isn’t coming off.

Try eating little meals, keeping things coming, little here little there. :)

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 12:05 pm

Lisa, maybe I need to set a timer for when I eat…and I’m being 110% serious! You know how busy it gets (you have 6 lil’ ones) so they keep me moving so much that I don’t always remember when to sit down! Good tip :)

  • Leanne - May 15, 2009 @ 11:39 am

I vented my similar frustration earlier this week. I have been rigorously exercising for the last 2 1/2 weeks – doing some form of cardio a min of 30 min, plus weights and sit-ups. While I’ve only lost 2 pounds I can see the weight shifting around. I think my waist actually looks a little trimmer. But there’s still much to be done! MUCH! Hang in there. I am bookmarking this site.

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 4:29 pm

Leanne – I mentioned a few weeks ago that these last 10 pounds have been so much more challenging for me because I feel like I’ve already done so much!! 2 pounds is awesome too so you should feel so proud of that!! I think ya look great, just so ya know :)

  • Ashley - May 15, 2009 @ 12:24 pm

I had the same issue when I started training for my first marathon. I wasn’t eating quite as much as I should so my body seemed to be storing what I ate. I’m sure if I kept it up, I would’ve eventually started to lose it, but it’s better to make sure you’re fueling the right way!

I also found that once I quit writing everything down — and went more by clothes fit than scale numbers — I lost 5 more! I know everyone is different, but with just 10 to go you might get there faster than you realize if you don’t make yourself think about it all the time. I’m super inspired by your accomplishment…I’ve got 10 to kick as well…will continue to follow your FB Fridays!

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 1:34 pm

Thanks, Ashley! Well, that’s the thing..I haven’t tracked my food in almost a year. But, I figured I’d get back on it since it worked well for me in the beginning last year. I really am going by my clothes. I never thought my butt would see a size 8 again!! But, I just wanna lose these last few pounds to say I accomplished something – something I really never thought would be!! I guess I’m just stubborn and determined :)

And, you look great too w/ your marathon training self!!

  • Tracy - May 15, 2009 @ 12:40 pm

Frustrating! I missed your FB post yesterday but when I saw your comment today I was thinking it was sure going to be what you were expecting – not this. I wish I knew what to tell you. The thing I’ve always been told when weight loss didn’t go my ways is – you didn’t burn more calories than you took in. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. I’m sure you will get past this and push past those last 10 pounds.

    Good luck!

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 1:37 pm

Tracy, thanks :) We’ve been on the same boat over the past year too, haven’t we?? Guess we just gotta keep on keepin’ on!!

  • Candi - May 15, 2009 @ 2:55 pm

Hi, I love your honesty! I agree with Mercedes. Did you keep up with The Biggest Loser this season? On the show, Tara was struggling with losing weight and after a talk with Jillian, she started dropping pounds like crazy! Kristen had the same problem, she was exercising like crazy and gained a pound and was sent home. Just make sure you are eating enough food for your exercise routine. You are such an inspiration to me. My girlfriends and I just started a new blog for us to be accountable to each other to lose weight. We have all had babies recently and while we realize we’ll never be stick poles (I’ve never been a stick pole, I assure you) we need to get healthier for our children. My cousin and I are in our mid 30’s and have 1 year babies. It’s so hard to carve out enough time to exercise. But I am going to be determined to do it! Thanks to your fat burnin fridays and all your encouragement you blog about. So just know, your positive effort has rubbed off on some more mommies! Thanks so much! (babies are napping, now I’m going to do the treadmill!!)

    • mommysnacks - May 15, 2009 @ 4:19 pm

Candi, thanks so much for your comment :) And please let me know what the blog is you and your friends are creating!!! You know, in all of this I have never wanted to be stick thing. I like curves (my husband does too) and I like being strong!! Carving time out to exercise is a HUGE challenge. It sounds like you have a good routine going and a great support system!! I’m so glad you’re doing it!!! You go girl and get your run on :)

  • Mom of Faith - May 15, 2009 @ 6:06 pm

I have just started the Self.com Challenge and am working out with my Wii-Jillian Michaels-most every day. You’re doing great! You’re an inspiration to the rest of us..and you gaining weight? Well, that just makes you human.
I’ve been pretty sick this week and haven’t been working out like I would like.

I do have to agree about the under eating though. I have faced the same problems before.
    Keep UP the great work!

    • mommysnacks - May 16, 2009 @ 11:49 am

Amanda – thanks so much! I really just want everyone to know that if this mom of 3 (with the weight from baby #1 who is now 9) can do it ANYONE can!!! And, I think the biggest point in me sharing is that I want others to see that there is not an easy fix to this, as you know! Good luck on your Self.com Challenge! I’ll stop over to see how you progress and provide some encouragement!!! :)

  • Tanya - May 15, 2009 @ 11:31 pm

In the same boat. I lost the last 15 pounds of “baby” weight last year and then slowly stopped working out and got back into my habit of eating JUNK and gained 7 back. I’ve been doing a cardio workout 3 days a week and trying to stay between 1200-1500. It was so much easier to eat 1200 calories last year. I didn’t have a problem. I find myself wanting to eat all day long now!! I need to start eating healthier snacks so I can have more snacks during the day.
On the days I find it hard to workout I throw my hip hop workout in. So not my personality but it is fun and I can let loose without anyone watching!! :) Thanks for posting for progress!!

    • mommysnacks - May 16, 2009 @ 11:48 am

Tanya – I thought eating 1200 calories last year was so much easier for me too!!! I have no clue why…I knew it was possible to eat that then, but after listening to some others advice in this post, I am definitely going to look at my calorie intake and see if I need to increase it. But, only gaining 7 pounds back is great IMO!! When I get to goal, I’m going to allow myself 5 pounds either way…so, that’s pretty good !!

  • Andrea @ Saving Everyday - May 15, 2009 @ 11:54 pm

Just wanted to tell you that I used to eat bananas for my cramps as well, but switched to low sodium V8 a few years ago. One small glass has 2-3X the potassium (for the cramps) and is very low is sugar and calories :-) HTH

    • mommysnacks - May 16, 2009 @ 11:45 am

Andrea, great tip! I am going to try that!!! Thanks :)

  • Cassie - May 16, 2009 @ 12:20 pm

I lost no weight this week either! No worries but I wanted to tell you that Fiber One bars are my secret lover. Seriously…don’t know if you have tried them but they taste like candy! (I suggest the pbutter or apple) but they are all amazing. One last tip NEVER consume a whole box in one day….not that I have or anything…

    • mommysnacks - May 16, 2009 @ 12:36 pm

Cassie – I LOVE the Fiber One Bars!!! I love the chocolate ones :) And, LOL @ eating a whole box…that would definitely be easy to do!!!

  • cwcomment - May 16, 2009 @ 1:56 pm

I always find my diet less overwhelming when I embrace the power of small and take it one day at a time. I think of it as having to only behave from when I wake up until when I go to bed. Good luck!

  • Kristin - May 16, 2009 @ 11:14 pm

I’m so excited you’re getting an iPhone because there is a free app called Lose It that has been amazing for helping both me and my husband lose weight. It helps you make sure you’re eating enough calories but not too many. I’ve been amazed at how much I get to eat while still losing weight. (I’ve lost 20 pounds and am at my goal weight.) You should check it out! My brother makes fun of me because he says I sound like an iPhone commercial. :). By the way, I think it’s fantastic that you’re able to run as much as you do. That’s something I need to work on. One of these years…

    • mommysnacks - May 16, 2009 @ 11:29 pm

Kristin – AWESOME!!! I just heard something on an app for the Iphone for counting calories so I’ll definitely add that! It’s like that iphone does everything!! How have I lived without this long, I’ll never long…well, I don’t have it yet but I know that’s what I’ll think!!! And, thanks for the running compliment. I never thought I’d be able to say 3 miles is an easy run…like ever…but I can now! And, hope to say that about each additional mile I add too!!
