Copycat Long John Silver’s Chicken Recipe

I can't remember the last time I visited a Long John Silvers! You won't even know the difference between this batter recipe and the Long John Silvers chicken batter recipe! I'm sure this has to be healthier. In my head anyway! Either way, this copycat recipe hits the spot when I'm craving Long John Silvers chicken!

I worked at a shoe store during college. I often frequented the Long John Silver's during lunch breaks. I would always get their chicken planks, hush puppies, fries and a large pink lemonade (check out these homemade lemonade recipes).

Ahhhh, to be young and able to consume all the greasy foods again. Well, I make this in my Air Fryer now so it's less greasy. But still.

All of the ingredients you will need to make the Long John Silvers chicken batter recipe and yummy chicken planks!

Copycat Long John Silvers Chicken Ingredients

  • 1 lb Chicken Tenderloins (or Fish of your choice)
  • 3/4 cup, Flour
  • 2 Tbsp, Cornstarch (or Arrowroot Powder as a Whole30 or Keto alternative)
  • 1/4 tsp, Baking Soda
  • 1/4 tsp, Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp, Salt
  • 1 tsp, Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp, Onion Powder
  • 1/4 tsp, Garlic Powder
  • 3/4 cup, Water

This Long John Silvers chicken batter recipe tastes just like the real thing!

Copycat Long John Silvers Chicken Directions

    1. Combine all of the batter (dry ingredients) in a bowl and mix well.
    2. Add water and stir until well combined.
    3. Heat oil to between 360 and 375.
    4. Dip fish or chicken in batter to coat completely.
    5. Deep fry for until golden brown (about 3 minutes per side).

I'm telling you, you won't know the difference! If you decide to modify the ingredients to make it more Whole30 or Keto, try using Almond flour in the place of the flour. You can even put this in the air fryer (I love our model we use it it daily – even the kids!) to save more time and have it even healthier with less grease!

  5. Can you tell me how you would do this in the air fryer? I am still learning how to use it!!

    1. Hi Kylene, to make this in the air fryer, I would set the temp to 390-400 and bake for like 5-7 minutes. We LOVE our air fryer!

  6. How do you do these in the air fryer?

  7. Made these for my family for dinner. They came together fairly quickly- had to fry in small batches due to frying pan size, so frying them was time consuming. They came out pretty good. They really remind me of Chinese ” chicken fingers”, take out style. Paired well with Chic fil A dipping sauce, Ranch dressing ,sweet chili sauce , and honey mustard for dipping. I feel these would be great party appetizers with dippers, served up hot- but I dont think they would hold up well as leftovers. I served as adinner with rice and a veggie. Kids liked them- no one raved about them though. On a scale of 1-10, I’d rate them about a 5.

  8. I found the batter to be a little thick so it took longer than normal for my chicken to fry I like the crispiness but it doesn’t taste like long John silver but it’s very good. Next time I will add more water to thin the batter down and more onion powder and garlic powder.

  9. Exactly the same. Thank you.
