Baby Shower Gift Ideas: Diaper Cakes DIY

Baby shower gifts can be so expensive and this is the perfect do-it-yourself gift idea for the new baby. I am not a “by the book” kind of gal when it comes to gift giving and I strive to make the presentation more memorable than the actual gift. Diaper cakes are the way to go since everyone needs diapers.

Diaper Cake Supplies

:: Large Pack of Size 1 Diapers
:: Bottle of Wine/Champagne/Sparkling Grape Juice
:: Platter
:: Rubber bands
:: Ribbons and Accents
:: Baby toys

DIY Diaper Cake Instructions

{Step 1} Place the bottle in the middle of the platter. Fan out the diapers and wrap around the bottle. Secure the row with a big rubber band.

{Step 2} Repeat for the second layer of the diaper cake and set on top of the bottom row. Three rows should be enough and will be smaller as you work your way to the top of the bottle.

{Step 3} Cover the base of the platter by gathering fabric or tulle around the diaper cake. You can even add a receiving blanket as well.

{Step 4} Once the “cake” is assembled add ribbon to cover the rubber bands.  You can additional accents, toys or gifts to create a theme to make it unique for the new Mom!

Project Cost

This project can vary in cost depending on the extra gifts or baby toys that you add to the diaper cake.  You may want to set a budget for the extras so that it does not get too expensive.

Diapers can range depending on the type/brand. I prefer the Pampers swaddlers which cost between $15-$20 for the larger pack. Be sure to watch for sales and stack with a coupon.  However, any diapers will work.

You can find ribbon at many craft stores in their dollar bins and you can stack with a coupon.  You should be able to find various colors and patterns that will work for this project and look for baby pattern fabric or tulle to decorate the base of the cake.  You may use a baby receiving blanket as well.

You can get really creative with this project for an awesome baby shower gift.  You can even consider adding infant Tylenol, Diaper ointment and other practical baby products that are needed but not normally given as a shower gift.  Typically, you can find coupons for these items in the Sunday Inserts or on the printable coupon sites.

    Love this gift idea. It’s so useful. :)

  2. Use a canister of clorox wipes for the inside, instead of wine or grape juice. That’s even more useful.
