I hate to waste food. I have come up with a system when I am cleaning up meals to use as much as possible. Two things that make a difference:

When you are finished cutting vegetables for salads and meals there are always scraps left over. This includes the tops/bottoms of celery, carrots, squash, onions, etc. Instead of throwing these things into the trash or compost pile, I freeze them in a bag labeled “for broth”.  When the bag is full I can make chicken, beef or just vegetable stock out of them.

The other thing I have incorporated is to keep all leftovers. If there is only a spoonful and not enough for one meal, then I add it to a container in the freezer labeled “For Soup”.

This gets filled with a variety of things like chicken, veggies and pasta… anything goes. When that container is full, or whenever I make a soup in my crockpot I add the contents of the container. It doesn’t negatively effect the taste of soups/stews because you season it anyway.

I never make the same thing twice but it all turns out good and the family doesn’t even realize that some of the stuff is left over!

I save all my plastic grocery store bags in an empty upright tissue box. Then, all I have to do is pull one out to line the bathroom trash cans.

It saves time by having one in each bathroom and saves money by not having to buy one of those bag holders!

Who knew that good ‘ol Mickey D’s accepts competitors coupons on like items? I sure didn’t until I saw it on the door to the restaurant when my daughter and I stopped in for an ice cream cone. Nice to know!

Occasionally I get coupons for Wendy’s that I can now use at McDonald’s. A little competition never hurt anybody and if it helps to save me money, I’m all in.

This may vary by region/location so check with your local McDonald’s to ensure you can use competing coupons.

To save money on clothes, I trade with a friend! I have a 6 year old son and a 4 year old daughter and she has a 6 year old daughter and a 4 year son. It’s a perfect set up for us!

We trade clothes twice a year, during the spring and fall. I think it’safe to say we are saving a ton of money only have to buy clothes for one of our two kids. Probably up to $100 depending on where you buy your kids clothes. I never pay full price when I do buy them clothes anyway :)

We save in many ways:

• Make our own cleaning supplies.
• Dry clothes outside on the line whenever possible.
• Turn off the heat and air unless needed (use ceiling fans).
• Use glass jars in the garage to store nails, screws, bolts, etc.
• Learn how to can and freeze right now (might save us money but not sure yet).
• Bring used paper home from work (they recycle it) and print out coupons on the clean back.

It is amazing how many uses you can find for items you throw in the trash. We like to look at items and see if there is a new way to use it before we recycle it. My brother uses broken aluminum curtain rods for plant stakes in the garden (though sadly only the tomato plants made it though the drought this summer).

We also use a lot of the rubber bands from the newspaper and mail around bags of chips and freezer bags to keep them closed til their next use. All these things saves on money, waste, and keeps things out of landfills.

Sewing, after saving money, is my main hobby. However, sewing can get incredibly expensive. My tip today combines the two pretty well.

When trying to get fabric, I don’t go down to my local hobby lobby very often. Although, you can get remnents there pretty cheap. I go to my thrift stone. You can find beautiful fabrics, I sheets, clothing, table clothes, and curtains.

I have been using a lot of different apps to earn gift cards. My favorite right now is the Viggle app.

You earn points from watching tv and redeem for gift cards. I have been using for about a month now and have earned $20 in CVS gift cards. If you play the CVS game like I do, you know $20 will go along way at CVS.

This app is for smartphones only and with tv not DVD.

Another one that I’ve been using a lot lately is the iBotta coupon shopping app. You don’t earn gift cards but you will earn cash – much better reward in my book!

I recently noticed that I was pitching leftover chicken breats and other leftover meats from my fridge because they weren’t being eaten. I understand not wanting to have a meal that you just ate in too close a proximity but then a lightbulb went off.

What if I took that leftover meat and found a different way? Take those leftover chicken breats and shred them to turn into meat for pulled chicken bbq or chicken tacos. By doing this you are being creative in the kitchen, less wasteful and more money smart!

I reuse envelopes. I just put a blank label over the return address and write on the ones that have the clear windows or put a label on the return address too! I then either glue or tape it closed and then mail it.

I always have blank labels from sending off for free samples and if you got your address on those free labels that come in the mail when people are asking for donations you can use that as the label covering the return address.

I like to shake out my laundry and send it through the spin cycle one more time before moving it to the dryer. A lot of times I will see more water come out of the machine. While at CVS for my weekly trip, I was scanning my CVS card at the machine that spits out the coupons. One of the store clerks saw that I was finished and told me to keep scanning my card and getting more coupons until the screen reads “no more coupons.”

So I scanned my card again and a whole other string of coupons came out!  After two scans it was finished.

I love that this tip received from one of their clerks and that I found out how to get more coupons!

The hubs and I tried something new this year as far as paying our bills/monthly expenses and are loving it so I thought I’d share!

We decided instead of using our check card to make our everyday purchases like groceries, gas, dining, etc. that we would use our Discover Card. The deal was it had to be paid off monthly so that it would be similar to using a checkcard as far as payments coming out of the account as soon as they are made.

We decided to go the credit card route because we looked into the rewards that Discover offers and the cash back you can earn on purchases. We have been astounded at how fast the rewards rack up!!!  We haven’t used any of the rewards to date and are planning to cash them in at Christmas time as Discover allows you to use your dollars earned on Amazon, which is were I typically shop that time of year anyway.

So far this game plan is working for us – and yes, we have continued to pay the card off monthly!

Do you ever have overripe bannanas, but you don’t feel like making bannana bread at that moment and throwing them away seems wasteful? When I have overripe bannans I throw them in the freezer, peel and all. Then when I have time to make bannana bread, all I have to do is pull them out of the freezer weeks later.

When I have left over vegetables such as corn, green beans or peas instead of putting them in the fridge as leftovers nobody will eat, I dump them in a container or old butter dish and freeze them. I then use these left over veggies in my vegetable soup I make every winter and it helps cut down on the amount of frozen veggies I have to buy to make my soup.

I buy buttermilk when it is marked down for clearance at the grocery store because it is nearing its expiration date – usually for $.39 per half gallon. When I get it home I freeze it in cubes in ice trays. The trays I have hold about 2 TBS for each cube. I empty the trays into a zip to freezer bag and date each bag to make sure I use the oldest ones first. I also sometimes will freeze a pint or a quart at a time in the original container.

We make a lot of buttermilk cornbread and biscuits. This way I always have buttermilk for my southern recipes, even in small quantities. Plus it saves me about $6 a month in milk purchases. The best part is I never throw out spoiled buttermilk…not that buttermilk isn’t already “spoiled” to some degree anyway!

To save money on buying gifts, just more things to take up space, and/or to spread out your expenses try giving gift certificates for experiences or services. You can make and print some beautiful gift certificates from free online sites.

Your children could give a gift certificate for a special movie overnight with a friend along with a big pancake breakfast or a gift certificate to join your family on a special outing. For a new mom you could create your own babysitting coupons or bring a dinner a week for a month.

You could give a friend a certificate to clean their house or for a membership in your very own dessert of the month or muffin of the month club. Then you could deliver something special and homemade to your friend every month for however long you promised in the beginning.

Be creative!! It’s a way to save money AND make memories AND spend more time with those who are precious to you.

Pay attention to the things your family and friends are into. This may sound like a “duh” statement.

I was talking to my cousin about what she wanted. She’s too old to like toys so I asked her if she would like a quilt. She said she has 3 (she’s 13 so she doesn’t need that many). I got her into sewing about 6 months ago and we talk about it together a lot. I finally had the idea to suggest sewing materials and she said it was the best idea ever.

I give her stuff that I dont need or like anymore all the time and she always gets really excited. This translates to me as an adult. I get things all the time that I like “ok” but if you wanted me to get super excited about a gift just listen to what I talk about.

I like to cook a lot, I like to save money, I like to sew. All of these things is what I talk about. If you got me materials, it would save me money too. I would freak out from excitement lol.

I would probably be more ecstatic if you bought me flour and butter than I would if you bought me shoes. That’s just the way I am.
