“We are out of Spaghetti Sauce” Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

Picture it. The noodles are boiled. The hamburger is brown. You reach for the spaghetti sauce and there is none to be found. Even though spaghetti sauce is a stockpile item for your family, you ran out.

Now what?!

Well, you do what you gotta do. No, I didn't put ketchup on it Jenny Rapson! I scoured the pantry and made some, quickly, as in 10 minutes quick. The homemade sauce recipes I was familiar with required hours to prepare. Um, did I mention I needed it in 10 minutes?! That wouldn't do!

Lucky for me I had some whole tomatoes in the pantry. I bet tomato paste would work well here too! I used the following items:

  • Can, Hunt's Tomatoes with Basil
  • 2 Cloves, Garlic
  • 1/3 cup, Heavy Cream

I put the tomatoes in my blender and pureed. I put a little olive oil in the skillet to get the garlic all yummy and sauteed. I then added the pureed tomatoes to the skillet, along with the heavy cream.

The next time I make this, I'll drain the tomatoes from the liquid before I puree them. They were a bit runny, but they still worked fine.  I'll also take a picture the next time I make this to include in this post. Given the “I need this in 10 minutes” haste, a camera was the last thing on my mind!

Also, I'm paying extra close attention to sodium nowadays, and I'm happy to share that the sodium wasn't bad with this at all! I know Hunt's has a no-sodium option of canned tomatoes so you could always pick those up to keep in the pantry as “back-up.” And, the best part, the kids actually liked it. They are spaghetti kids, but to know they liked this made me feel like a domestic success!

What have you done when you're out of Spaghetti Sauce?

  1. The only time I actually ever buy spaghetti sauce is to make lasagna, due to the sauce I make is too runny for lasagna.
    Here goes…..
Brown hamburger, with chopped onions and garlic to liking. Drain. Add 1 can of diced tomatoes(I use Hunts with basil), 1-8 oz can of tomato sauce(you can use 16oz if you like it saucier), and a little less than a teaspoon of sugar(I don’t measure). If sauce needs thickened I sprinkle a little bit of flour until it’s to the thickness I desire(this is a must for me if I use the bigger can). I also put in some Italian Seasoning and Another seasoning that I can’t remember the name, it’s not the Mrs. Dash all season, but something like it with NO MSG. I watch my sodium as well:)
Oh and don’t forget the noodles:)

  2. We almost always make our own spaghetti sauce- unless there’s been a GREAT Ragu stock up deal. I brown my meat, throw in green peppers, onion, garlic, and mushrooms. Stir in some fresh parsley, basil, and granulated garlic with a little salt and pepper. I add in a can of tomato sauce and a well drained can of diced tomatoes. Then add a tbsp of honey (or a tsp of sugar) and anchovy paste if I have it.
