Review: ShopSavvy T-Mobile G1 Phone Technology

Last month, I was so lucky to receive the T-Mobile G1 Phone to test/review ShopSavvy. ShopSavvy is a new technology that is available to download for the G1. Let me just tell you!!! As in “helped me save $100” awesome!! You see me above in action shopping, scanning and sharing the device with my girls on this trip.

The ShopSavvy application is essentially a bar code scanner. You can read the FAQ's on their site here (expired). All you have to do is complete a simple install on your G1, which was very easy to do, and scan away. And, did I ever scan some stuff!!

To use ShopSavvy, you place the bar code in the picture viewer and it will auto-zoom and take an image of the bar code – you don't have to press a button for it to take the picture or anything (thanks). When you have the bar code scanned, a box immediately comes up to ask if you want to search the web. You choose the button “Search Web” and be prepared to enjoy the awesomeness that is ShopSavvy!

When I first received the phone, I was scanning everything in the house to see what major price results came up. I found a game we purchased on clearance for $20 was actually cheaper at an online store for $13. So, not that much of a difference when you consider shipping, but it was still a savings.

The main savings came with my new digital camera. I was lucky to have this phone on my purchasing trip. I did my research on the specs for our camera, so I narrowed down the actual camera to two options and went shopping at my local Best Buy. Once I got into the store to feel/play with the camera for a bit, I decided upon this one.

So, I whipped out the G1, shared the phone and explained ShopSavvy to the great customer service associate. He was intrigued and was completely cool with me scanning the bar code. As I did, my bar code search came up with several results. I found the same exact camera for $100 LESS!!!! YES!!! Since Best Buy has the BEST policy on price matching, they agreed to match the price for $100 off. Being the happy consumer that I was, I picked up a few accessories for my new camera and walked out of the store with $100 in my pocket thanks to ShopSavvy!

The other thing to note is since I found a camera at that price using ShopSavvy, I was completely willing and ready to walk out of the store and order it online. I think using ShopSavvy at stores that will actually price match for any store (not just local competition) is another key to savings. Luckily, Best Buy does that and I tend to shop there more because of that too (so, thanks Best Buy!).

The G1 Phone is around $200. I saved half of the amount of the value of the phone in one transaction thanks to ShopSavvy. Now, will I go run out and purchase a G1? Sorry, no, that's just not in our budget. But, if you need a phone with many bells and whistles, you may want to consider this one. Although, ShopSavvy is working to be accessible on other brands (right now, it's strictly T-Mobile's G1).

You never know when you will be out and about looking at a sale item, not intending to make a purchase. Since you're out, and you want to be efficient, you can quickly scan the bar code and you WILL KNOW if it that price is good (or AWESOME like my experience). Having ShopSavvy on your phone will help to save a few bucks and your time – Win/Win!

As I say that, I do think this was valuable for my big purchase. I don't see the value in the day-to-day purchases like groceries, weekly store runs. My purchasing behaviors are very different for those shopping items. I plan my shopping trips and would never have the time or desire to scan each bar code on all of my groceries to find the true value in it. But, for a large ticket items, it is completely worth it.

Potential Improvements
The only improvement I could offer for ShopSavvy would be to have the search results come up with the prices clearly visible in the result header. Some were visible, but there were many I had to open up the search result/url to find the price on the website. If it was very clear in the search listing, you could quickly scan the results to see which would be the best choice to use and get your price match.

Finally, the ladies of Mone4Moms interviewed one of the co-founders of Shop Savvy. You can hear his interview and other many ideas Shop Savvy will be rolling out at the Mone4Moms Blog Talk Radio Archive here (expired). There are some really neat features they are working on like scanning bar codes to list allergy information, and creating recipes/grocery lists. It will be interesting to see what the Shop Savvy team comes up with!

Never heard of it, but it sounds awesome! Of course, I don’t think a new phone is in our budget right now, but if it was, I would definitely consider this one with that ShopSavvy option!

Good review! I loved the phone too but Verizon is the best provider in my area! :) Otherwise I would be all over that phone…even without the Shop Savvy, the other features are cool!
