Copycat Pottery Barn Floating Shelf DIY

Isn't this shelf B-E-A-UTIFUL! My friend and I found this online at Pottery Barn and fell in love….but not with the price. These shelves range from $59-$85 for a 2-foot section – A PIECE. This is well above our price range for home decor. I put my thinking cap on I HAD to make this!

Pottery Barn Floating Shelf Supplies

:: (3) 3-foot Floating Unfinished Wood Shelves*
:: Black Spray Paint
:: Drywall Nails

*Found at the local hardware store.

DIY Steps

{Step 1} We rushed to our local hardware store and purchased 3 floating unfinished wood shelves at 2.5 ft in length and some black spray paint. Menards is my new fave…such wonderful customer service!

{Step 2} Take all of the tools outside and spray paint the shelves a few coats. Let them dry in the sun for about 20 minutes per side.

{Step 3} Hang the shelves in your desired look. To make one longer than the other I hung two side by side.

A simple project that you can use to display anything. I loved this idea of blowing up old pics to put up on the shelves at my good friends' house. Easily looks like you spent a mint!

Project Cost

$40 total. The 3 shelves were $36. The spray paint was $4 (you could save even more by using a craft store coupon and getting it for half off). Compared to the $60 starting point to purchase these from Pottery Barn, this turned out even more beautiful for a much better price!

  1. Nice! My husband copycatted the big dollhouse bookcase for our daughter, using as much scrap word as he could. It looks just as good as the Pottery Barn one at a fraction of the price and fits all her books with some room left over!
