Make Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag

At a birthday party last year, we had the typical cake. Instead of having ice cream cups, the mom decided the activity would be for the kids to make their own ice cream. This served two purposes since the kids could enjoy a craft that they would then get to eat, which was also fitting for a birthday party (since most always have ice cream).

After talking to the party hostess, Natalie, she explained that making homemade ice cream in a bag was really simple. She had the bags already prepared for the kids with the ingredients inside. All they had to do was smoosh, stop and thaw out their hands, and smoosh some more! If you decide to do this type of treat/activity with your kids, it's really simple. Here's what you will need:

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag Ingredients

* Ziploc Bags, Gallon Size
* Ziploc Bags, Pint Size
* Ice (crushed worked best)
* 1 tbsp, Sugar
* 1/2 cup, Whole Milk or Heavy Cream
* 1/4 tsp, Vanilla
* 6 tsp, Rock Salt

Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag Preparation

1. Fill the Gallon Size bag half full of ice, add the rock salt and seal the bag.
2. Put the milk, vanilla, and sugar into the Pint Size bag, and seal it.
3. Place the Pint Size bag inside the Gallon Size bag and seal it again carefully.
4. Shake, smoosh or toss the bags until the bag with the liquid looks thick like ice cream.

Also, a note on this. What ends up happening is the kids start the smooshing of the bag but then mom or dad ends up doing the work. So, have a few towels handy for hands, big and small, in case they freeze up or get wet from the bag. To keep the kids more interested in doing their own smooshing, you could make a game out of it. Let the kids toss their bags to one another. See who can toss it and catch it from the farthest distance.

I've never personally done this but you could probably add fruit for a different flavor. You could probably even make sorbet following these same instructions. I'll be trying that when it gets warmer since our oldest is allergic to milk. If anyone has done this, please let me know!

Have you ever made homemade ice cream in a bag? Got any other tips to share?
