Homemade Pizza Dough

This homemade pizza dough recipe makes a soft and chewy dough. You can make ahead and freeze the dough to use for later.

Homemade pizza dough is unbeatable but some days you just don’t have the time. Take a couple hours out of an afternoon to whip up several batches. Freeze them in freezer safe ziplock bags, and anytime you are in the mood for pizza you can pull one out to thaw it and have a delicious homemade pizza dinner!

This recipe makes 2 large pizza crusts and will keep well in the freezer for up to 6 weeks. I let the kids get involved in topping the pizza and find they are much more open to trying vegetables and other toppings when they have a hand in it.

Homemade Pizza Dough Ingredients

  • 4 cups, All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tbsp, Salt
  • 2 ¼ tsp, Active Dry Yeast
  • 2 Tbsp, Sugar
  • 3 Tbsp, Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 ¾, Warm Water (not hot)

Homemade Pizza Dough Directions

  1. In a small bowl combine water, yeast, and sugar. Allow to sit 5 minutes or until foamy.
  2. Combine flour, and salt in mixer, fitted with a dough hook.
  3. Pour yeast mixture into flour mixture and knead on low for 8-10 minutes. Alternatively you can do it by hand for the same length of time.
  4. Set dough in a lightly greased large bowl, cover with a clean dry towel and allow to rise for one hour.
  5. Punch down the dough (just a couple jabs will do). Divide dough in half, and shape into 2 dough balls.
  6. Let dough rise another hour.

Freezing Homemade Pizza Dough

Skip the 2nd rise (Step 6) and place in a freezer bag that has been lightly coated in oil, pressing out all the air and seal tightly. When ready to bake thaw pizza dough for about 2 hours on counter, roll out into pizza shape.

Homemade Pizza Dough Bake Time

Preheat oven to 450°. Top with your preferred toppings and bake for 12-15 minutes.

You can use this pizza dough recipe with the homemade pizza rolls recipe. You can also use your bread machine to mix all of the ingredients if you want. Just pull out the dough before it starts to bake. The stand mixer works good too!

Which flour is best for pizza dough?

I prefer to use all-purpose flour for baking. You could also use a bread flour, but I always have all-purpose on hand so that's what I use the most.

Can I use baking powder instead of yeast for the pizza dough?

Yes, you can substitute baking powder in place of the yeast. I would use the same amount of baking powder (so, 1 1/4 tsp).

Is yeast necessary for pizza dough?

You need yeast to make something rise. However, some people use baking powder instead but it will not taste the same. Yeast gives breads that delicious flavor though. It really makes a difference in my opinion.

How do you make crispy pizza crust?

I prefer to use a baking stone like this one. The air fryer is also another way we've found to make our crust super crispy, especially when you reheat it!

  4. Andrea, I don’t think you can beat having pizza dough ready to go in the freezer. If everyone did it I think it would put all of the takeaway pizza places out of business. so much more healthy for everyone. Thanks so much for linking up to Thriving on Thursdays. I’m featuring this at tomorrow’s party.
