DIY Oven Cleaner

Homemade Oven Cleaner Recipe

I am embarrassed to admit I don't clean my oven very often, and it was looking pretty bad. Bad enough that I was considering throwing it out and buying a whole new one to avoid the trouble. This is a byproduct of spillage in the oven, then I would say “Oh I'll clean it up when the oven cools down”, and I would of course forget, the next time I preheated it I would say “ Oh forgot that last time, as soon as it cools down I need to scrub that out” and inevitably I would forget, and repeat like a hundred times.

The other reason I avoid cleaning it? I abhor the toxic fumes of oven cleaner, they are horrible and every time I start to spray – I start to choke. That cant be good for me, or my kids, or my pets. But finally I could avoid the dirty job of cleaning out the oven no longer, there was enough build up on the bottom for a whole blackened casserole of some sort. So clearly I needed to find a replacement that wouldn't send us all running for cover from the smell.

I experimented with a couple different recipes I found online and came up with this one that does the job beautifully. Besides avoid the smell, you can save quite a bit this way too. A can at the store costs about $4 – $7. Making your own is less than $0.75 in ingredients!

Oven Cleaner Supplies

  • 1 Tbsp, Borax
  • ¼ cup, Vinegar
  • 2 cups, Hot Water
  • 2 Tbsp, Dish Soap (blue Dawn)
  • Spray Bottle
  • Baking Soda to sprinkle (not added to water bottle mixture)

Oven Cleaner Directions

  1. Combine hot water, Borax, vinegar, and dish soap in spray bottle and shake well to combine thoroughly.
  2. Spray interior of oven, saturating it and concentrating on the worst buildup areas.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda inside oven where you have sprayed.
  4. Allow to sit overnight.
  5. The next day spray again, and wipe out oven with a hot soapy rag.

That's it! I lay a towel up under the edge of the oven, and fill a big bowl with hot soapy water to wipe out all the gunk.

Oven Cleaner Before and After

The after pic was after spraying and wiping with very little elbow grease. There were a few spots I had to attack with a little force but for the most part everything wiped away.
