DIY Stain Treater

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Becky:

I haven't purchased a stain “treater” in over 3 years. I LOVE this easy, inexpensive solution to stains, and believe me I see a LOT of stains! I have 5 kids age 11 and under, and my husband is determined to stay a kid forever!

I use approximately 1/3 parts Dawn Dishwashing Liquid to 2/3 Hydrogen Peroxide. That's it. Combine and gently shake to mix. I keep mine in a squeezy ketchup bottle.

I use it to pre-treat stains, to re-treat stubborn stains that make it through more than one treatment, and to treat stains that I didn't see the first time (which is most common, unfortunately).

Hydrogen peroxide is extremely cheap to purchase, and Dawn often goes on sale at Kroger in conjunction with P&G coupons. Sometimes I can get it for free! Plus, I use the Dawn for other uses – normal dishwashing, hand soap, and bathroom cleaner.

I am so intrigued by this!! It's going on things to try right now. Have you used a similar recipe that worked?

  1. RE: The stain pre-treat made with dawn & peroxide: Does the peroxide bleach out colors?

    1. I’ve used Hydrogen Peroxide on colored laundry items many times without any fading or bleaching. This sounds like a keeper!

My question is the same as Cheryle. I have such a hard time getting my husbands “sweat” stains out of his collars on his work clothes. However, I do not want to use anything that will fade or discolor his work shirts that are not white.

  3. That was mine too, does the hydrogen perioxide ever discolor anything or does the dawn sufficiently dilute it?
