Diet & Fitness Snack: Fat Burnin’ Friday

OK, if you follow me on Twitter, you know all about this. Otherwise, this information is new and I'm so excited to share it with you!

Last Saturday, I – Mommy Snackin', Fat Burnin' Andrea – ran my very first 5k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell I'm excited just a little. I heard about this from my friend in book club (who did it too, go JY) and thought it would be fun to do. I have really been focusing my runs on endurance versus fat burnin' which is why my weight probably hasn't gone down a lot lately. Yes, I believe, there is a difference for my body when I work out this way.

Anyway, I signed up early last week but I was nervous about doing it. While I do run each day, I don't run the entire workout. I usually stop at least once and walk for 2 minutes (which is more typical for interval training that I discussed here). So, last week I really focused on running the distance each day and I managed to do it.

The actual course for the 5k was a good one for my first race. It was flat (and I'm used to running with a few hills in my daily routine) so I felt like it was easier for me to manage the entire 3.2 miles. I was craaaazy nervous though, like I thought I was gonna lose my bagel w/ peanut butter nervous but after the half mile mark, I found my groove and all was OK!

I'm proud to say I finished 2nd in my age group and my time was:

While my “exact” time will probably be a few seconds higher, hubs actually timed me as soon as I got at the Start Line (since there were several in front of me). But, my goals were:

  • Run the entire race – no walking!
  • Finish at/under 30 minutes

I achieved both goals and I am super pumped! Here I am as I'm finishing the last half mile – I'm smiling because I see my hubs, kids and BFF (she surprised me and showed up) cheering for me. Having a support group there was extremely motivating and I'm so thankful for each of them!

It was very early in the morning and I'm not all dolled up…who am I kidding, this is how I normally look people (just less lycra)!!!

And, last week that 5th day of running (or 15 miles total last week) did NOT help me lose one stinkin' pound this week! Honestly, I have been playing around with my foods to see what's giving me more energy that the eating side hasn't been my focus. My shins are really sore this week too so I wasn't able to get my 4 days of exercise in. I am still focused on losing these last pounds so I'll have patience since I want to do more races and having the energy is imperative to do so!

How did you do? Are you focused on exercise or foods more than the other – or are both equally important to you? Please share your results this week so we can motivate one another! Good luck this upcoming week of fat burnin'!

I am so proud of both of us!! You did great for your first 5K. My own personal goal for the Applefest 5K was 43.00 and I did it in 42.51 GOD is good. Wish I could run like you but I am lucky to be alive after two heart attacks. When is our next race? I will do a 10 K if you do!! GAME ON !!!

Amy – I’ve really been focusing on endurance for around a month or so before I ran this so if that helps at all. My hubs is totally a runner too and we were going to do this one together but we had kiddos to manage. You keep running and beating that fat man on the couch (twitter talk, ya’ll – another reason to join) and you’ll totally dominate in a 5k!

Jy – girl, you did so awesome and I am totally amazed at all that you have done to make your lifestyle change (seriously, ya’ll this girl will have to guest post here because she has an AWESOME story)!!!

I want to do a few more 5k’s and see how my running changes throughout the winter but I’m definitely thinking of a 10k – maybe spring??

Mrs. Bargain – I was totally thinking of your 5k you commented on here a while ago. This really does make running take on a whole new meaning.

Kim – I can’t imagine running while pregant – heak, I didn’t want to walk half the time because of the pain so that takes a lot to go any distance while carrying a lil’ pumpkin!

    You have done amazing!
I wish I was a runner too. I am more of a dancer and love aerobics.
