Diet & Fitness Snack: Fat Burnin’ Friday

This week was a really challenging workout week for me! I increased my cardio workout to 41 minutes (from 31 minutes) each day, which also meant an extra 5 minutes of running (and for me thats a lot!). So, one of the things I was really focusing on during those last 10 minutes was how my body was moving. Which made me think of this…

Remember your Form!

If my body isnt going to cooperate and work its best when I add more time (or in general), then its better for me to give it all in the 30 minutes versus adding another 10 for calorie burnin sake. Obviously, Ill burn calories with those extra 10 minutes, but my form has got to be good too for exercising all the muscle groups I like to focus on during cardio! My hubby taught me a good tip to use when youre running to prevent tightening up your arms and shoulders during running. He was a runner in school – I say was because he's not as active (ahem) as he used to be, ya know! But he could go run 5 miles tomorrow and smoke my time by loads, Im sure!! The tip is to hold a saltine cracker in your fingers while running. I dont hold an actual cracker (I might just eat it) but I imagine there is one there so Im loose with my fingers and sholders. Ive noticed that whenever Im straining or starting to tighten up, I take time to think about my form and follow this tip. And, every time, I'm able to relax and finish my workout feeling good about the sweet burn and tonin' I accomplished! Actually, if you remember the things I shared about myself, I also play a song with my fingers so my hands are loose. I know, Im a dork – but it works for me!! Actually, I'm sure you can use this cracker method with whatever exercise you're doing too – it might not be a cracker to help your form but another way to remind you to keep good form during your workout!

I also apply the same mental thought while Im on my elliptical trainer. Only with the elliptical, I keep my grip looser on the action arm part to focus more on my legs. Obviously, if you want the focus more on your arms too, you wouldn't be as loose. But, I tend to focus my resistance training on my arms so Im not as concerned about the toning aspect during my cardio.

And, as for weight loss – I had none again! No gain either, so that's always good! Im not too upset about it because I havent been as rigid with my eating habits lately so Im kind of expecting it. Im hoping that adding these extra minutes each day will reap me some fat burnin benefits next week! We will see! I am going to focus throughout the weekend and upcoming week on healthier eating. Wish me luck :-)

Please let me know how you did too! Im always excited to see how everyone progresses with their fat burnin' journey. Im definitely cheering for your fat burnin too!!

No weight loss but we went to Detroit for the weekend and a Tigers game so that meant that brats and beer at the ballpark. There was no way I could say no! But I’ve worked out 3 times this week and I’m proud of that, its been crazy busy!

You’re so right on with trying not to tighten up your arms and shoulders. I see people at the YMCA that are white knuckled from holding onto the machines so tight. I wonder sometimes what they are working, especially on the elliptical, if they are pulling the handles and holding on so tight.

Great job on the no gain! You are due for a weight loss of a few pounds – maybe next week? I checked out your anniversary post before this one (Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary) – you look great!

OOps, forgot to post this earlier. I made up for lost time this week. (turned out I was PMS and did have water weight, been nursing my daughter for 7 months and havent had to deal with that in a looooong time!) So, I did ‘gain’ the 1 pound last week but this week I lost 1 1/2 pounds. Really, just a half pound was actual loss. I am happy!

Thank for the saltine trick, but I did imagine you jogging while nibbling on a cracker. Quite funny!
