Reuse Plastic Grocery Bags

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Beth:

This is an old tip, but maybe some haven't thought of it yet. When I shop at Meijer, Kroger, Walmart, etc, I always end up with a lot of little plastic bags that they put my groceries in. I always save them and reuse them for my bathroom garbage can liners as well as for smaller kitchen garbage bags.

All month long, I save the “ends” from whatever vegetables I have used… whether it be cucumber ends, pieces of onion/scallions, or carrot stems, leftover garlic…. EVERYTHING…. plus, I save all of the bones from whatever meat I’ve cooked/baked/grilled…. and I just stick them all in baggies in the freezer. Then, on a day I know I’m going to be home anyways, I put everything into a few pots, and boil, boil, boil. I end up with about 2 gallons of the most amazing homemade stock, and it is WONDERFUL for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!!! I use it as a soup base, for gravies, adding to rice dishes. It saves me a fortune on canned broth or bouillon cubes, and my food always gets rave reviews for that “from scratch” taste…. and, best of all… nothing goes to waste!

    1. I Love it! I have done this before, but not saving veggie scraps, just chick bones and cutting up veggies (what a waste!). Have you done this to make beef broth? For those who are vegetarian you can also do this to make veggie broth!

  2. I stopped using all paper goods (except TP!!). We now use linens for everything. It definitely saves on the budget and the environment! We even have cheap plastic plates, bowls, and cups for cook-outs. Sometimes when guests come over they think it’s a little weird, but when I tell them that it saves money it’s like a light bulb goes off!
