Save on Cable Costs

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Small Footprints:

Folks spend a lot of money for channels they rarely watch. Most of us spend a minimum of $40-$50 dollars a month on it. So my suggestion is to give up cable. Savings = minimum $480/year.

That being said, many want to watch TV. So consider this. Most networks stream their programs online. Yes, they are usually broadcast a day late but for $480, I’m totally willing to wait. One can also buy online TV for a lot less per month than cable on sites like Netflix (get a month free) and HuluPlus.

Want to stream online program to your television? No problem – buy a HDMI Cable at the local electronics store (or here on Amazon for $3!) and plug it between your computer and TV. Again, a minimal cost but far less than a year’s worth of cable TV.

We gave up our cable over a year ago and haven’t missed it a bit … and I love not having to pay that bill each month. An extra benefit has been that we watch TV when we want to and not when it’s “scheduled” … that has freed us up to manage our time better.

We are still figuring out what we will do about cable. I am all for giving it up completely but I want a happy compromise for family peace :) I would also suggest Apple TV or a Roku (or both) as they also stream movies and shows. I plan on purchasing a Roku at some point since we are Amazon Prime members and have access to tons of free shows and movies as a result.

Instead of hooking the computer up to your tv which can be a hassle, get a Roku player or Apple’s iTV and hook them up to the TV. You can stream Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon directly to your TV through your home network without the hassel of a cable going from your computer.
