Don’t Waste Bread Ends or Crusts

The following Everyday Savings Tip comes from, Carrie:

There are lots of ways to use the ends of loaves of bread or crusts to save money. Put the end of a loaf of bread into a tight sealing jar of brown sugar to keep it soft.

Make homemade croutons out of both the ends or just the crusts – there are lots of recipes online.  Dry out the pieces and process them into your own homemade breadcrumbs. These last two ideas are especially important if any one in your family is on a gluten free diet and you either make or buy gluten free bread. You can still enjoy croutons on your salad or recipes made with breadcrumbs if you make them yourself out of your gluten free bread.

Homemade bread crumbs should be stored in the freezer to keep them from molding. While my kids are younger and notice less, I just make sandwiches for them by using the ends and turning the crust end to the inside. If you put enough peanut butter and jam or honey on it, they never notice and the nice soft sides of the ends are on the outside of the sandwich.

You can also save up your bread ends and then use them all for french toast. Once they’re soaked and cooked, my kids don’t care if they’re end pieces or not, as long as it has something sweet on top.

I save all my GF raisin bread ends and use them to make a baked french toast casserole that is soooo yummy and great for special breakfasts.

I just ran out of breadcrumbs and was going to buy more, but then I remembered I read this post awhile back. I absolutely hate the heels and I always throw them away. I had 4 left from loaves of bread that we had, so I toasted them, ran them through the food processor, and put them in the freezer. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that before! One less thing we’ll have to buy.
