Saving on Doggie Pill Pockets {Recipe}

Greenies Pill Pockets (pictured above)

The following Best Savings Tip comes from reader, Darrell:

My son’s dog has to take pills twice a day. That is not something she wants to swallow. We purchased pill pockets at the store a couple of times and they worked great but were to expensive, even on sale.

So taking a dog treat recipe I use, I was able to reduce that down to a substance that would hold the pills. Now it is a snap to give her pills without trying to force them down her throat. Just make your dog, or even cat, is think they are getting a treat.

The recipe calls for three ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp, Milk {$0.05)
  • 1 tbsp, Peanut Butter {$0.06)
  • 2 tbsp, Wheat Flour {$0.02}

Mix the ingredients together in a coffee cup with a fork. Take the mixture out of the cup and knead in your hand. The product is ready to be used. Store in a plastic bags in refrigerator.

The recipe can be reduced to make less by replacing the tbsp to tsp with just 1 tsp of milk, 1 tsp peanut butter and 2 tsp of wheat flour.

This cost just $0.13 for one batch that can last more than a week versus $0.28 for a store bought pocket. Or, $8.50 on sale for thirty pockets (lasting 15 days) which is $0.56 a day to purchase them.

Making my own is less than $0.02 a pocket ($0.13 cents for the total batch divided by 7 days). This is a savings of more than $0.54 cents a day.

This is an awesome idea! We don’t have any pets but I know their medications can be even more costly than humans (we have insurance to offset our co-pays and such). I love the price breakdown of savings too.

What a great tip that I hope will help a lot more people who need to give their pooches medicine! Thanks for sharing!

    I am so going to make this as I have a few furbabies that require daily meds, and yes I have purchased the pill pockets and they dont last but a day or two. Thank you so much for sharing.

    I want to thank you very much for this recipe! I have been using since early June 2012 and my dog LOVES it and you have saved me a fortune! For my min pin the 1 tsp ratio is just perfect. Thank You so very much!

    BTW, I forgot the ratio and was totally happy that I found it again today … this time I pasted it on a “Sticky” so that I wouldn’t lose it again.
