Planting a Garden

As the weather gets warmer, I start to crave to get into my garden.  I know that we may still have some frost yet to come, but there are some plants that I can plant now.  Some of these include Cabbage, Swiss Chard, Onions and a few others.  Let me show you how to start your garden with a few plants that can withstand a little frost.

Garden Items Needed

  • Garden Space
  • Plants
  • Vegetable Seeds

I have a couple of raised beds in my garden.  I will show you how to make an inexpensive raised bed later. I have cabbage and onions for now. With the vegetable seeds, you can plant your seeds now (consider trying the eggshell planters). Just follow the directions on the packet.

Garden Instructions

{Step 1} Start with a piece of ground that has been tilled and most of the weeds pulled out.  Smooth out the soil with a rake and make level.

100_0817{Step 2} Dig a small hole large enough for your plant.  Take your plant out of the container and tear the roots a little to promote growth. Place it into the hole.

If you have the containers that can be planted along with your plant, still break open the bottom of the plant where the roots are to promote growth.

{Step 3} Cover with water and allow to soak into the ground before covering with soil up to the crown of the plant. The crown is where the soil was in the original container.  Tap the soil gently with your hand.

{Step 4} Continue in a straight line and follow growers directions on how close the plants need to be.  Using a raised bed allows me to plant closer, thus growing more.

{Step 5} Water every other day, depending on the weather.  If the soil looks dry on top, remember, it is still moist under the ground.

100_0819To test whether or not it needs water, take you finger and stick down in the ground to your first knuckle.  If it feels wet, then you can wait a day or two to water.  It is feels dry, then water as necessary.

Be sure to pull any weeds when you see them and try to get all the root.  This will help in not allowing the same weed to grow back.

I will be sharing more with you as my garden starts to grow throughout the summer. I can't wait to hear how your garden comes along too!

    1. Jen,

No matter where you live, you can still grow your own veggies. Its called ‘Container Gardening’. If you have a window sill or patio where you get at least 6 hours of daylight, you can have fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, even green beans. You grow vertically (up) If you are interested in starting a container garden, watch in the comimg weeks and I will show how simple it can be.

If you would like me to give you some starters now on how to do this, just email me and I will be happy to walk you thru a few gardening tips.

      Mary
