Do you remember D.J. Tanner? You know, the cute and bubbly blonde from The Full House (hello – 80′s child here!). Well, I got to sit down with the one and only, Candace Cameron Bure, aka D.J. Tanner to ask her a few questions.
First off, the reason I even got to meet Candace was because she was in the Cincinnati area doing promo for her new movie, “Truth Be Told” which airs Saturday, April 16 on Fox (at 8 EST). This is a movie part of Walmart and P&G’s Family Movie Night series.
Honestly, I did watch Candace growing up as she portrayed D.J. Tanner in the non-conventional house with her dad and two uncles. When I get to meet celebrities, I of course am curious how they manage everything in their life and that of being a celebrity. In the past few years of blogging, and meeting a few celebrities along the way, I am sometimes surprised and appalled at how they are in real life. Some are portraying a personality even in meeting with us. This was NOT the case with Candace. She was so completely down to earth and totally normal! I almost wanted to ask her to “Bump” so we could exchange contact info (fyi, Bump is an app where you “bump” iPhones together and your contact info literally jumps from your phone to theirs). But I didn’t because..that might seem weird and stuff :)
I was just interested in her as a person, truly. She is a Christian which isn’t always the popular religion to be in Hollywood. And, she set the tone for sharing that with my first question on how she does try to manage it all: daughter of the King, wife, mom, actress, celebrity, etc. Her response was so encouraging to hear for this harried mom of three, “First and foremost, it’s God and family. If anything or any activity is a potential, those two things come first.” Honestly, sometimes that is hard for me to make a priority in my own life too. Candace’s husband is a work-at-home father now and it was only until then that Candace decided to return to the acting world since having a parent at home with their kids was important for them.
Something I was personally interested in too was being a child actor at a young age. I mean, the track record for child actors isn’t the best with terms of stability but she clearly has shown that isn’t with every famous child actor. I asked what life lessons she learned as a result of working at a young age and she shared candidly. Being in the spotlight and working in corporate America really taught her that you had to work hard. While her mom managed her (and brother, Kirk) for years, she kept her grounded along the way.
Of course, being a savings resource, I had to know what Candace’s best savings tip was. She jokingly shared that shoes wasn’t something she saved on (which goes along with my motto, “save on what you need so you can spend on what you want”). However, they are doing something to help with saving which is reducing their dining out. While Candace admitted to being brand loyal and not using coupons, she shared that at least dining out less helped them save more so they could buy the higher quality food items for them to cook at home. And while I haven’t read her recently published book, “Reshaping It All: Motivation for Physical and Spiritual Fitness“ (my amazon affiliate link), from the book description, she shares about her struggle with food living in the super-thin mentality of Hollywood.
“Truth be Told” is a 100% family friendly movie, which is hard to come by nowadays. That was one of the reasons that drew her to the script, she knew she could stand behind the purpose of the movie, and it fit into her 6-month hiatus from her current job “Make it or Break It.” I’ll be on vacation and miss the movie premier on Saturday, April 14. I’m going to try to watch it online with a movie pass I received. You can tune in for FREE on Fox at 8 pm (EST) to catch the movie. It looks great so I’d love to hear your feedback too!
Be sure to check out Erin, $5 Dinners, recap of her chat with Candace too!
Is that her in the pic? Wow, she sure looks different!
Thank you so much for sharing. I admire both Candace and brother Kirk so much. To be in the Hollywood circles and to keep their faith strong is an amazing feat. I try to support any project they do, knowing that they are Christian and only work on family friendly projects. When I saw the movie in the tv line-up, I was really excited that it is on primetime and for families. My family will definitely be tuning in for this one!
Great article, I grew up watching both her and her brother on their famous 80s sitcoms (LOVED them both) – so I’m glad to see she’s still around!! I did notice that in the beginning of your article, you have the date as April 14 instead of the 16th – just wanted to make sure you realized that! Can’t wait to see the movie, thanks for the reminder!
