I remember going on field trips as a young girl. We got to go to several places: Cosi, State Capital, Zoo, Local Flower Nursery. You know the best part of the field trip for me? My lunch. I am not even joking! I always bought lunch at school so when we had a field trip, we always took a packed lunch. Mom would buy me the best stuff. So, it was like a double treat: going to a cool new place and getting an awesome lunch!
Oh yeah!
I try to volunteer to go on our boys’ field trips as much as possible. While growing up, my mom worked full-time so she could never get away to come on field trips with me. So, going on the boys’ field trips is a priority for us (either my husband or I will take time to go). No matter what, I always take special care for what we pack for lunch.
I do enjoy the lunch, but I also just enjoy experiencing the trip with the kids. Last year, our oldest went to the State Capital. I remember going there as a young girl (HELLO, did I EVER feel OLD!!). But, that last year field trip almost didn’t happen. Our school has cut some funding and field trips were part of it. I’m glad it came through but I was really disappointed to hear that this extra activity would be gone first.
Actually, its estimated that over the course of the current school year, the number of school districts eliminating field trips will increase by 56 percent. This is according to a 2009 report from The American Association of School Administrators. I’m not surprised since it already happened to our district. By our standards, we have a great district but we also need more teachers and other things. I can see why field trips are the first to be taken out of the budget.
Lunchables Lunch Combinations is launching a program called Field Trips For All. Part of this program is Project Potential. The goal of Project Potential is to empower kids to reach their fullest potential. How many kids do you think went on a similar field trip to their state’s Capital and then went on to run in public office and make a difference? And, how many were never given that opportunity?
Of course, there is a contest to go along with this (watch the cute video above)! Anyone 6 years or older can nominate a deserving classroom (with your help, of course). From all of the nominations, 50 classrooms will be chosen to go on a field trip! That’s pretty cool – all it takes is a nomination! Who would you want to nominate?
What was the most memorable field trip for you?
Either with your kids, or as a yungun’ yourself?
