Did you take advantage of the Target 75% Clearance Toy Sale? If you missed it, call your store to see if it’s even happened yet. Some of our Target Stores in our have been wiped out, others haven’t reduced past 30% yet. Call ahead to see. I managed to acquire a few items for gifts, but the selection was slim.
That got me thinking. What merchandise items do you never pay full price for? I’m sure you don’t pay full price for a lot of stuff. But, do you have a few key items you know will be on clearance or a great sale so you wait to make a purchase?
A few items we wait for are:
I never pay full price, or anywhere near that price for wrapping paper or decorations. I always wait for these items to go to at least 75% before I make any purchases. The gift sets during Christmas time are usually not branded with Christmas packaging. Those are great to have on-hand for gifts throughout the year!
We actually got our current Christmas Tree at a yard sale but garage sale shopping is a completely different topic in itself.
Summer Pool Toys
Every year we buy these, and every year they are lost! It’s never something I would even try to pay full price for since we can never seem to keep track of them!
End of Season Clothing Items
I generally always purchase our boys’ clothing at least 50% off. The only exception to this is if I make a purchase at an outlet store. The prices where we shop are reduced up to 30% off regular retail to begin with (typically to be considered an outlet, they have to be reduced to 30%). Even with that outlet price, I wait for the 40-50% off sales too!
And, coupons – of course, the coupons!
Back to School Items
After school is back in session, I always find a few clearance items for supplies and even thermos items/lunch boxes! I find that the boys always need to have their supplies replenished so even with the regular sale prices, I always stock up! If they can’t use them, surely the teachers can.
Here is a great article, “Best Deals Ahead for 2010.” There are products categorized by month/season. There are suggestions for merchandise reductions by day of the week. I’m sure this is somewhat regional. Again, it all goes back to knowing your store. It’s always good to *make nice* with cashiers and managers because they do have the inside information that can help you save sometimes!
Now, to take advantage of clearance prices, you have to have a bit of cash on hand. Paying with credit doesn’t make sense (if you don’t pay it off in full, that is). By the time you would pay interest on the bill, the % of savings has gone down making the deal less attractive. We have always understood the time/value of money. Honestly, that point is a lesson we have really started following since I have been staying home. Now I just find it challenging to find the best clearance and sale prices and save more money!
There are inevitably going to be a few items on your list that you just can’t get on sale or clearance. With those items, I try to buy online through a cash back site and save on those big ticket purchases (like I saved last year with our microwave).
What items would be on your list? Are there certain stores you shop because of the clearance prices?
