I get to be involved in a really cool project and I’m excited to share it with you!!
I am a Max Mom! Office Max has asked several bloggers to participate in a campaign to bring awareness to teachers’ personal out of pocket classroom spending.
Did you know teachers spend an average of $1200 of their own money on classroom supplies each year? Thats $4 billion annually!
OfficeMax has joined with Adopt-A-Classroom to create “A Day Made Better“‚Äîa national cause event founded to erase teacher-funded classrooms.
I have ALWAYS done whatever I can to help our sons’ teachers. We have been so lucky – and blessed – to have some amazing educators so far. I feel like it is the least I can do to volunteer some time and money to help out the classroom.
This year, the “A Day Made Better” campaign will take place on October 6. On that Tuesday, 1,000 teachers will be surprised in their classrooms each with $1,000 worth of essential supplies from OfficeMax. Thats more than one million dollars donated to help teachers! Principals at needy schools nominated the teachers for demonstrating dedication, innovation, and passion.
To pay-it-forward, OfficeMax and Mom It Forward have teamed up to create awareness about the issue of teacher-funded classrooms and to give you the opportunity to get involved and help a teacher in your community on behalf of the “A Day Made Better.” Heres how…

This is AWESOME! Thanks! Could really use this with 3 of my kids being in school!
I’d like to nominate Sarah Aucoin, a 2nd grade teacher at Northmoor Elementary school in Dayton, Ohio! She is extremely dedicated to her students and goes well above and beyond the call of duty. Every child should be so lucky to have her as their teacher!

Laura Stewart Terrell at Pinewood Elementary in Charlotte, NC was my son’s 1st grade teacher and is now teaching 2nd grade. She is absolutely amazing. She started her career teaching English in Shanghai, China. She is enthusiastic and really engages the minds of the kids in her class.
She led her class in making a Mayflower model with empty bathroom tissue rolls to represent each of the 102 persons that was on the Mayflower! They got to parade the “ship” up and down the halls. They had several writing projects, including my son’s favorite: create your own superhero. Parents were invited for all the writing presentations, and the kids were like proud little professionals giving lectures. Mrs. Terrell embraces technology, and her use of the Smart Board really got the kids involved in storytelling. Her dedication and enthusiasm do not stop at the classroom door, she danced every dance with the kids at the Valentine’s Day party and cheered the children on during Field Day. She manages to make each child feel special, always has a smile on her face and never turns down a hug from a child. Communication with parents was a priority for her, she was always available by phone and email. My son learned much, yes, but was also nurtured in her classroom and I could not have asked for a better teacher for my child.

I’d like to nominate Kelli Murray at Oak Grove Elementary School in Decatur Illinois. She is a phenomenal teacher who goes way above to make sure her students receive a quality education. She stays after school to tutor children and spends thousands of her own money for classroom supplies.
Thank you.
I would like to nominate Mrs. Lynn Webber from Lockhart Elementary School, Lockhart SC. We have been very lucky to have Mrs. Webber for the third time this year. We have her in 5K, 2nd, and now 5th. We are a very small school that the county has been trying to close for many years now saying they can ‘t afford to keep it open . The amount of money alloted to this school has been drastically cut due to all of this. I know she would be very grateful of such a wonderful gift.
I would like to nominate Mrs. Gilpin at Phelps Center for the Gifted in springfield, mo. My daughter goes 1 day a week to the district’s gifted program and just loves her! The Phelps Center operates mostly on fundraisers and donations, so any help to one of it’s teachers would be fabulous!
I would love to nominate, Nicole Peterson, a 1st grade teacher at Prescott Elementary in Lincoln, NE. She is a wonderful, kind, giving, caring teacher to all children who pass through her class.
I would love to nominate my friend Alyson who is a teacher in Antioch, TN. I see her working hard to create fun lessons for her high school students and definitely invests her own money into her classroom. As a pastor’s wife, she serves in the classroom and the community. I know this would be a blessing to her.
I wanted to nominate Jennifer Curley. She is a homeschool mom/teacher to her son – 2nd grade, daughter – K and her 2 1/2 year old with Downs Syndrome. She was a grade school teacher prior to becoming a stay at home mom and homeschooler. She is a great teacher and very giving of her time to help me as I began the journey.
I nominate Kathryn Flynn. Kathryn is the mother of three, and in order to help offset the costs of sending three children to Catholic school, she took a position as a Kindergarten aide, and then was promoted to school librarian.
Kathryn spent the entire summer organizing the library, which was woefully neglected and completely out of order. Each shelf took hours to collate, and she spent money out of her own pocket to paint the walls and spruce up the room, because funding is so tight at the school.
Kathryn’s niece has Down Syndrome, and this affords Kathryn a unique and valuable vision in which to create an atmosphere that caters to the needs of all the children. She went to yard sales to purchase bright and cheery framed pictures, and makes a tremendous effort to help out children who have special needs by fostering an atmosphere of fun, inclusion, and warmth.
Kathryn has thought outside the box. When she first saw the library, it was a dark and dreary room, musty-smelling and neglected. Her enthusiasm for education has manifested itself in providing a library that is now a busy hub of the school, a place where kids want to go, instead of shying away from it.
I’d love to be able to present Kathryn with a check so she can buy whatever else she needs to help her continue her quest to make her little corner of the world a gem.

I would like to nominate Courtney Carver from Ambrose Elementary School in Ambrose, Georgia. She is very deserving of this reward because she not only pays out of pocket but she also stays and tudors, she gives students rides home and to school when needed. She loves teaching and gives 110% each day of the year, even in the summer with summer school.
I nominate Margie Dunlevy who is an exceptional teacher at Boulevard Elementary School. She is the gifted enrichment teacher and teaches whole school enrichment to every kid in addition to pull out individualized instruction for accelerated kids in all grades and has full time fourth and fifth grade students as well. She truly does the job of three people! A team of parents are helping Mrs. Dunlevy set up a hands-on science lab and she can use all the supplies we can to get to set up and run the lab. Thanks a lot!
My son’s teacher is THE BEST! We just love her! Judy Ruburg at Farmview Montessori Garden. She has done so much for us in the short time that we’ve been there. Thank you all for doing what you are to help our most valuable resource here in America!

Posted on Facebook (Hope I did that right!)
I would like to nominate Alicia Gray, an exceptional third grade teacher at Allgood Elementary School in Dallas, GA. Allgood Elementary is a Title 1 school and most of the students come from low income families. As a teacher, this only makes the job more difficult because she receives very little help from the parents, they simply can’t afford to help.
This is only Alicia’s second year as a teacher but she is highly respected by her fellow teachers and loved by all her students. She even received the Sally Mae teacher of the year award last year. Teaching was certainly her calling, she pours her heart and soul into it everyday.
I’d like to nominate my son’s speech instructor Tina Williamson. Since Tina began working with my son who suffers from speech apraxia we have noticed a huge change in his speech and development. I am thankful that she is a part of our school district and able to help my son as well as other students in the distract. Thanks Tina for all you do!
I would like to nominate my husband, David Veteikis who is a 2nd grade teacher at John’s Elementary in Arlington, Texas. The school is Title I and David has many out of pocket expenses. He is a great male role model for his students.
I would love to nominate Polly Cowan, the first grade teacher at my children’s school, St. Francis de Sales in Lebanon.
Mrs. Cowan is an amazing teacher who is devoted to the success of each and every one of her students. Teaching isn’t just a job for her, it is a true calling and I am so glad that two of my children have had her.
Thanks!
My son’s teacher Eileen Bernstrom should received this award. She’s a fabulous teacher and works very hard to keep me in the loop with weekly phone conferences on my son’s status! I truly love what she’s doing in the classroom for all the kids.
I’d like to nominate my friend Celeste. She’s a 3rd grade teacher in 1 of the poorest counties in South Carolina.
Celeste gives 110% of herself to these students every day. She teaches the lowest level and struggles to find ways to motivate her students. Many of them are non-readers and are reading on a first grade level. She tries to encourage them to love books so they will want to read. She constantly finds new ways to stimulate her students.
She has received no funds for her classroom this year. Parental contributions are rare.
