Jennifer,
I'm sorry I didn't see your comment after mine, I don't. I actually live in Michigan. Animal rescues are another place I see occasionally asking for things like that, since its mostly done with volunteers and alot comes out of their own pockets.
Also, I was talking to my diabetic grandmother about how I get them for free, and she actually asked me for one. Apparently most insurance companies only cover 100 test strips per month, and most people test 3 times daily so thats 90 strips with 10 left over, however sometimes the strips malfuntion or don't read when inserted and some days if her sugar is out of whack she has to test more often. Then she runs out and can't get more. Alot of the Bayer monitors come with 10 free strips in them, so even though she doesn't use that kind usually, she was willing to learn the meter so she would have some back up test strips. She could just go buy herself another box of the strips at the pharmacy, but they run anywhere from $50-$100 per package and some people on fixed incomes just cannot afford that. I am actually mailing her a package today of what I have gotten for free. So if you know any elderly people who are diabetic, you might also ask them if they could use an extra meter or two....its always nice to know or see the people you are actually helping.

My doctor took them. She said she will give them out to cash patients or others who may need them. She was very thankful to receive them. I never thought about the Vet. I will probably offer my next "batch" to them.

Check with your local home health care agency. I looked all over to find somewhere to donate my 11 that I had acculumulated. Ours was thrilled to get them for their clients who don't always qualify for them free in their insurance and don't have the money to buy them out of pocket.

Also, you can donate meters to crisis pregnancy centers--they give them to impoverished mothers-to-be with gestational diabetes.

I also had a hard time finding anywhere to donate my meters...but my vet was extremely excited when I offered them up to her. Pets are never covered by any kind of insurance, and some people who have diabetic pets just cannot afford that kind of stuff. I gave her 6 of them, and she'll use her discretion when giving them away. I'll keep searching for a place near me, but in the mean time I'm glad that someone or something can get some use out of what I already had sitting around.

Jennifer, you could check with the shelters, nursing homes, Salvation Army, other local charitable places. I have given ours to friends who need them.
