Giving Back: Kids Against Hunger

by Savings Lifestyle: Andrea on January 31, 2009

Giving back is what it’s all about, right! And, we are able to do so much more because we save a lot thanks to couponing! As you know, nonprofit organizations need our help more than ever! I believe God has blessed our family with my savvy saving sense so we can be a light for Him during this stressful economic time. We feel our family needs to act as God’s soldiers and do the same!

With that, I wanted to take some time to share about a great organization my husband’s friend (Hi, Brian) sent to us called Kids Against Hunger. I had not heard of the nonprofit before, but after reading about it, it is truly a GREAT cause! Taken from the Cincinnati chapter Kids Against Hunger site, here is an excerpt on this nonprofit organization:

Kids Against Hunger packages and ships highly nutritious, life-saving meals to starving and malnourished children in developing countries and the United States. We do this by mobilizing the energy and caring of American children, teens, and adults on behalf of hungry children around the world. Kids Against Hunger seeks to end the literal hunger of poor children receiving the meals, but also satisfies a hunger among prosperous Americans, a hunger for meaning and contribution.

OK, so it’s about getting kids involved to help to be God’s soldiers to help other kids have a better life. I love it! This would be a great way to get our kids involved! While it does say it’s about kids helping, obviously, any help is appreciated - no one will be turned away who comes wanting to help feed hungry children!! And, this is amazing: “One person volunteering for 2 hours will pack enough food for 1 child for 1 year!” Just two hours can make a huge difference!

This week, in the Cincinnati area, Kids Against Hunger is working with Papa John’s Pizza (16 participating locations – see this flyer for locations) to raise money for this worthy cause. If you order Monday, February 2 thru Wednesday, February 4 from a participating Papa John’s and mention Kids Against Hunger while ordering, Papa John’s will donate 20% of the bill to the ministry. On top of that generous donation, Papa John’s will also discount your order by 20% too (on regular menu pricing). If you’re going to get pizza, maybe think about this one!! And, if you can’t make it out for this but want to help, please visit the Cincinnati chapter Kids Against Hunger site site and leave a comment!

Also, even though this event is in coordination with a local chapter, Kids Again Hunger is national and is part of A Child’s Hope International. You can find more information about the national Kids Against Hunger program here (expired) and possibly start up your own local chapter (how cool would that be!).

Romans 12:6-8: “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.”

Thanks for all the good words Andrea! All of us at KAH (especially the Cincinnati location) appreciate you taking the time to help.

We’ve been having a great turnout of volunteers lately, so hopefully this Papa John’s promotion goes good and we can stay stocked with the appropriate amounts of ingredients to pack!
